yesterday i was trying to run my mix thru my a-designs mp-2 and it was very annoying... on channel 1 i barely had to turn the gain knob to get to a good spot on the meter. For channel 2 i had to crank the knob MUCH more to read about the same on its meter.

This is odd since i'm guessing there would be a difference in sound (i got annoyed and let it alone), and it's super annoying because i can't get the exact same volume for the 2 very easily.

is this normal? or is my pre messed up? or am i messed up?

many thanks,
T

Why are you trying to run a mixdown through a microphone preamp?

I've heard of this phenomenon very rarely with a couple different pres. I've heard of people replacing the pre to find that everything is OK or replacing the pre to find that the exact same thing happens with the new pre.

Have you switched channel one's cables with channel two's? If that doesn't get it then I'd call Peter Montessi at A Designs.

It's done to specifically "color" the mix (I'm sorry if that was a rhetorical question and you were trying to make another point). I have a friend who does it all the time with padded RCA BA2Bs (lots'o'iron on input and output). It does add a cohesiveness to the sound (if you like that sort of thing)...

i do it because thats the only way to get a decent level to tape when mixing on my mackie since the mackie operates much better at less extreme measures...i use an RNP though..haven't tried it with a more colored pre...i think it might be interesting...

Aren't most of these mic pres' built-in DI's designed with instrument-level signals in mind? Just seems like your Z's would be a little mismatched, which would change the sound -- which I guess is what you're trying to do anyway, so never mind me.

i can use the pres on my TDK CD deck or my A Designs... i'll go with the MP-2
