Here's is a piano recording clip made with Naiant MSH-1 SDC Omnis, well within your budget.

Hey, this looks like it might be just the ticket for what I'm looking for.

I'm setting up my son for Xmas with a home recording set-up. I got the Fostex MD16HD and the Marshall Electronics MXL Anniversary Microphone Pack (MXL 2001-P and MXL 603S) for vocal and piano. I'd like to fill out the basic tools with a stereo pair and if these are "good enough" for a high school student to experiment with it's pretty hard to go wrong for the price.:D

What's the deal with this company. Do they only sell direct?

I use the MSH mics on acoustic and they're great. I'll never get rid of them.

The person who makes those mics is a member of this forum (mshilarious). On the FAQ it shows what payments he accepts, PayPal, credit card, etc.

They are made and sold by an illustrious member of this Board. Only available direct AFAIK.

Very cool. I'll order up a matched set which should make for rounding out a pretty decent beginners tool kit.

The other tip I've come across already is the Dorsey mod for the MXL 2001. It came paired with a 603 for $100 so I figure it's almost free and with the mod kit might be a decent mic. This forum is a wonderful resource.
