i have really been enjoying listening to the music in this section, and i woulld like to share some of my stuff with you guys, but before i post it,two questions #1 does anyone know if it is okay to post mp3's of a cover band.i have some stuff i recorded live in a club that is really knocked out,but i don't want ascap or bmi to come down here and whack me on the pee pee with a big hammer for doing it and......#2.is there a free mp3 encoder that is really worth a damn out there or do i have to spend some more money when my old lady is already pissed about my new marshall amp and the 128 mb ram upgrade i just bought.all the free encoders i have found so far really trash my mixes.....i have been head down butt up learning cd production and have just started delving into mp3.i would appreciate any advice greatly...........peace

strmkr,

I use audiograbber, a free downloadable program. It works great for me and has a convenient "normalizing" feature which sets a common peak level for a group of tracks that you wish to include in an album format. You can check out some of my MP3s (if you are willing to mind my primitive and arguably flawed recording/ mixing skills) at http://www.geocities.com/jstriomgs

Mp3

strmkr,
Like mgs said use a nomalizer. I use cakewalk P.A.9.0
It came with both the normalizer and a mp3 encoder.
Normalizing really enhances the mixed down tracks and makes it louder. The encoder changes the audio or midi track to
Mp3 format which is a simlar program to Mpeg Mpg...
Just audio with out the video. Versus .wav files which are so much larger.
The mp3 format is the next best thing since sliced bread...
So far as cover tunes on mp3.com I haven't been sued yet... As long as you don't use any part of the "origional" tune and you give the credit where the credit is due.
If you make a hit off of a remake with out permission from the origional songwriter, band etc... you could be dishing out some big bucks on royalties or even copyright infringement. More of the royalties than the latter.
Change the tune up a little to avoid infringement.

visit this site and read, read, read, and research.
Know your rights and theirs too ! Ignorance hath no place in a court of law !
I don't like it when a billion dollar company goes after the little guys for one song that was a hit 20 years ago.
When I do a remake I am careful that its NOT an exact replica of the origional. IF you are considering putting it on your cd that you are planning to sell...don't... it will make things alot easier than dealing with a bunch of money grobbling lawyers and an old broke songwriter...looking for his next million. Or deal with them for their permission and you profits from the cd will be paying for the permission...bum rap huh?
Hope this helps....

i thought it sounded great.i couldn't get it to download, though, only stream.is it set up that way,or is it me not doing something right?i am definately not the most computer literate person around for sure.something stupid on my part is that i have audiograbber, and have been playing around with normalising files and never saw the mp3 encoder staring me right in the face.doh!!!!!!

strmkr,

I'm glad you liked the music. You should be prompted to either "play from current location" or " save download" when you click on the MP3. I've never tried to download and save the files from our page (obviously because I have them on my hard drive) but maybe I should try to see if it works. By the way, try audiograbber's built in compression feature if you want to boost the overall volume of your track even more. It will appear as an advanced feature in the normalizing function.

Cheers'

Re: Mp3

thanx, gidman,it is good to have someone to help me out.i used to have a good golfing buddy who was also my entertainment attorney that handled details like that for me,but he retired last year and moved to florida on all the money he won from me on the golf course(my short game really sucks)and i haven't been able to find anyone locally to replace him that wouldn't require a second mortgage for a retainer.now unless the law has changed since the last time i put out a cover project, the proper procedure was to get a mechanical liscense issued for each song, and i think it was something like 6.7 cents per song per copy sold for songs up to 5 minutes or something like that.(numbers don't stay in my head very well)and i think the first 499 copies were exempt from the fees until you hit 500.something like that,so if the album became a hit and all the fees were paid properly, the writer was along for the ride.i may be way off, because so far,i have mostly been the guy who twisted the knobs, and played guitar and some hammond organ on different projects,so i have had my hands full.now i want to start an indy label of my own,so i will read every word on that site two or three times.one thing is for sure,no one will mistake the versions these guys do for the originals.the lyrics and chord changes are the same, but the rest of the stuff has definately been "tulsafied"....thanx....peace

when i clicked on it,my real player grabbed it and started streaming without giving me the option of a download.i am going to see if i can disable it as the default player and see if i can get my musicmatch pukebox to download.i hate these stupid programs that try to decide what you want to do instead of asking.........peace

I hear you! Some of these players try to take over your entire system. Good luck.
