Welcome to the jungle.
Here's a cool website, maybe you already know of it. i found it by accident.
Pretty interesting, not sure on how accurate it is. But some info is better than no info.

http://www.getthatsound.com/

Uhhhh... none of the information is relevant... unless you happen to have hired those particular players and are performing that particular song.

The hardware doesn't matter nearly as much as the player... machines don't make music... people do.

Yeah, that's a great site (buy it now). They used an Sm57 (buy it now) to record a Les Paul (buy it now) through a Marshall head ( buy it now) and a Marshall 4x12 (buy it now). They console used was an SSL (buy it now) and the whole thing was produced by Bob Rock (buy it now).

I tried there, but they only had a couple of second hand Rick Rubins

You have to go on Monday afternoons. That's the best time. If you go on the weekend, everything's been pretty well picked over.

Quick heads up guys, i just picked up a half price Daneil Lanois, and a buy one get one free on a phil spector, he even came with a free gun....Great website!!

Hey guys....someone broke into my house, and stole my Bob Rock, so if you happen to stumble across one, it's mine.... :D

Take from the site what you will. But if you think you'll actually be able to reproduce the exact sound, you'll be in for a suprise.

Besides if you replicated everything faithfully, you actually could replicate a sound. machines make music, as well as people.
Think of it like this: Ray charles is tracking "What I'd Say". Between takes someone else hits a key, you think it'd sound different if Ray hit the key?
Not that anyone today would get the exact same sound, since everything from the room to the recording medium would have to be the same.

So you don't think ANY of that is relevant huh?

Suppose you like the sound of the keys used on Ray Charles "What I'd Say".
And let's suppose you want to get something similar, but don't know what to buy.

Should you:
A. Buy a Rhodes because you think Ray used one?
B. Buy a keyboard and hope it has a similar sound?
C Buy a Wurlitzer 200 because that is exactly what he used?

Also all of the comments by the producers and engineers/etc on the bottom (in yellow) are sometimes interesting to read. Or wait, is that not relevant to anything to do with recording?

Metallica must have got their Rick Rubin from this place because all the Bob Rocks were sold out. That makes sense.

On second thoughts guys i am selling one of my phil spectors, cant get it to work....seems to spend most of its time taking photos of itself! And the daneil Lanois is..well...broken! So much for bargains huh, im gonna go and see if i can find myself a replacement battery for a burnt out Eddie Kramer.

Unless the information is wrong. In the case of AC/DC, it's wrong. Their engineer recently said that "The amps were a collection of modern and vintage Marshalls from 50 watt upwards. I generally find though that the best sound is achieved from the flat front cabinets with the lower wattage speakers.". That site would have you believe that a JT-45 was used exclusively for the album. They got it wrong on a lot of the Doors stuff too.

From a music history perspective, I think it's an interesting and informative site.

I could do without some of the sales pitches, :D but other than that, it's kind of a neat, and worth bookmarking.

.

chess, that's the most positive responce you've had to anything in months.

you ok?
