Can anyone point me in the direction where I can download a basic wave recorder for free. I want to record what I've done on my 4-track (rough demos), direct to the computer (with no expense!!), then transfer it onto a cd.

Would I have to use the mic or line in?

Thanks you helpful bunch!!

If you have windows, you already have "sound recorder" which will do it for you. There is one free multitracking program that I am aware of, called Kristal, that will allow you to do up to 16 tracks, I think. You should use the line-in for transferring audio.

Thanks Scrubs. I tried the audio recorder but it only records a minute or so.

I'll try that Kristal one.

Here is a FREWARE/SHAREWARE site that should have a recorder for you....

I was going to suggest SOUND FORGE 4.5. but it is no longer offered.

Goto the link above then press AUDIO EDITORS.

You should be able to find something that works for you there. ;)

A little trick for that....
Record until it stops. Hit record again, it should add another minute to the end of the file. Repeat until you have a long enough file built up. Save the file as your template and copy it each time you want to record a new track. If you record over the file now, you can record for the whole length of it continuosly. A little trick my band and I figured out when we were poor bastards.
And yes, you should always use the line in. The mic goes through an internal preamp that's essentially shit.
