So I have outgrown my 4 track and am searching for an 8 track. I have looked at the Boss BR-8 and have been advised to check out the Fostex F8 or a used tascam DA 88. Any advice? I like that the Boss has a drum machine, as simple as it is.

i bought an Emu brand "Darwin," a rack-mount hard disk recorder. it was on special for $500 from Musiciansfriend.com without a hard disk. this was the least expensive 8-track 44.1/48kHz recorder i could find.

so far i've recorded three shows with good satisfaction and no complaints.

I think you should go with an ADAT. Mainly cause you can get em used for cheap and everyone uses 'em. Just easier to rent one or share music in time of need. Even though they may lack recording time and transport ability compared to DA88/38s, they're 20bit machines, and I think that the TASCAMS are 16.

Lets hear it for the ADAT!!

Yo Yo:

ADAT spelled backwards is TADA, LIKE IN TA DA RA BUMP DE HEY!!!

Boy, getting old is old.

Whatever you buy, get at least 8 tracks. The Yam MD-8 works fine for me although I would bet the ADAT gets better sound; but, I predict within the next four months, there will be a gaggle of very good boxes to buy to record 8+ tracks and they will be SIMPLER to operate and the manuals, well, that's expecting a great deal, will be easier to comprehend.

I can carry on a conversation with my Hispanic friends, {I don't speak fluent Spanish] better than I can understand the ratiocinative process of those who write the manuals.

Well, listen and buy what makes you happy.

BR8 I've heard great things. I use the VS1680. Real learning curve but incredible for the price. The BR8 is a simple unit that uses Zip disks instead of MD. They can't keep them on the shelf. I know someone who's waiting as well.
