I am planning to get an 8 track digital recorder. The problem is, I am new to digital and have no idea what brand or format(zip, hard disk, adat) to get. If I go to the Fostex forum, they trash Tascams and if I go to the Tascam forum, they trash Fostex. Can someone give me an honest opinion on these two brands plus the Boss BR-8 and the Korg
D-16? I would really appreciate it.

D16

I am one of the few users who post D16 stuff here (at least in my short time as a member). The D16 is something to consider, especially now that they are one of the cheapest 16 track machine available. The new V2 software fixed most of the problems of the earlier machines. As for the 8 track versus 16 track - go for 16. You will need them someday. With the D16, you will need a cdr (approved by Korg) for backup. I got the yamaha 8424 external from dirtcheapdrives.com for about $300. Works great.

Good effects. Easy to use. Cheap. Very portable.

Bogeyboy2, the most imortant question to be posed to you
is..."What is your budget" ?

Don't truly know if you can get a decent daw for that price,
but you can check out the Roland BR8 at $650.00 or the Fostex VM200 now on sale at Sam Ash(and everywhere else for that matter) @ $499.00 .Tascam also has the 788 8-trk 24 bit hard disk recorder for $900. Also, check http://www.ebay.com for deals on used daws. Adats are a little more expensive such as the Alesis LX20 at $990.00 and the XT20 @ 1300.00 both which are digital-tape based formats.
Have you looked into computer-based recording?

I've thought about it but there are times I need to fade two or three tracks at the same time which you can't do with a mouse. I'll check out the Roland and Tascam you told me about.
