I finally did it. Got a 788 on the way. I'll be around now for sure while I'm learning this new machine. Thanks for the input on my research.

damn, just thought of a ? and haven't even got it yet. Does any one know if you can load tracks from a 424mkIII into the 788 using the individual track outputs on the 424mkIII into the track inputs on the 788?

bro you made a great choice. Ive had mine since late last year, and it amazes me how far things have come. For the price, you just cant beat the features that come with this little machine. I too did quite a bit of research prior to buying....... and have never been disappointed.

.........sure you can. 788.....the best 8 bones i ever spent. Mike:D

cool Guernica,

let me get this straight. 4 different tracks can be transferred from 424 to 788. So this means (for what it's worth) the 4 "new" tracks can be tweaked as well as having 2 more tracks to use, all this without any bounce. Reason I'm asking is having the 424 for 2 years has generated a huge inventory of tape. Now I think I realize that what comes from the tape into the 788 will still sound analog, but you could still try some of the effects processing on these analog tracks. If this is correct then this is gonna be way to cool.

thanks,

Got your email

Congrats,

This is the eight track I would get if I got an eight track. Looks like a winner!!

Have fun with it!!

Hey Bro....
Yea, what you are trying to do is easy.....but..... I'll bet that you dont do it for long. the reason that I say this is the difference in clarity. Recorded Tracks on the 788 are gonna be Way quieter than your old tape tracks. But, for the purpose of prosperity, and as a way to "jot" down some of your old ideas...... the transfer is easy money. ...good luck!:)

hey GT, what's up? Kinda excited. As excited I think as I was going from Porta2 up to the 424mkIII. Gonna loss a lot of sleep when the 788 gets here, for sure.

Guernica, even with the hiss and stuff like that, I have some tape that is one time tracking bliss. I have a few things that I know I'll never be able to reproduce. At least, it will be good experience using some the features of the 788. Like I said to GT, I'm kinda stoked.

Could be the fact that I bought a new pc. of gear and my wife is still here, or should I say, she's still letting me in the bedroom.

cool dtb! The 788 is my weapon of choice... I use it just like an 8 track cassette multitrack. I really dont use a lot of the features because I have been to busy just recording and havent learned how to use them.. I only had the thing for a year and a half now.:D

Anyway, Good luck with it, it really is a great recorder, and it is very easy to use...

Be warned though, just like any computer it is subject to crashes from time to time, and you lose whatever you didnt back up when that happens..

It has happened to me twice.. The good by far outweighs the bad though.. Definitely!

...start with at least version 1.10...I had TONS of problems with two previous versions...none so far with 1.10...you may be very sorry and pissed if you don't...

BPF, I haven't recieved it yet, it's paid for and ordered. I don't understand what the version (versions) are about. Give me more imfo.

Thanks,

dtb

dtb, one trick you can do with the "old" 424 is to track to it and
the 788 at the same time. The point of this is that the cassette
recording will tend to sound more compressed (in a good way!),
than your digital recording. Then you can use the digital one as the main source, and add a bit of the analog one as an effect.
Just learned about this one myself!

Chris

P.S. Plus there's the old "record the difficult guitar solo at slow
speed, then play it back at double speed" on the 424!

chess,
Are you saying using tracks of each machine at the same time, as 424 would recorded say on track 1 and the 788 recordeing on track 1 and then loading 424 track 1 into 788 to combine, tweak, and mixdown? I could see that if this example is correct. The slow guitar thang sounds neat. tell me if I'm wrong on the example.

thanks,

dtb

dtb,

...versions= upgrades in the operating system. when there are glitches, consistent problems, with certain aspects of the 788, TASCAM fixes the glitches, and then you are able to avoid those poblems by upgrading your operating system. mine came with-- i don't really remember, let's say 1.02, i had problems, i called and they sent me a chip to replace inside the 788 (very very easy, 1 minute job), which installed v 1.05, which fixed my problems temporarily, then more problems occured and I upgraded again, and again...finally, version 1.10 fixed everything for me and I haven't had problems since...

dtb, yes you could do it that way, or use the input(s) to the 788-then use its'
output(s) to the 424. Any signal path degradation would be minor compared to the
convenience IMHO.
Another idea would be to use the +- 12% tape speed feature on the 424
to double track vocals, for example.

Chris

BPF,

thanks dude, stuff I should know.

chess,

sounds like a lot of fun, doing different things with both machines. I'm sure I'll be here a lot after I get the 788 up an running. Shit man, I've had the 424mkIII for 3 years and still find out stuff even now. Like I said somewhere on here, I know I'll give up sleep time learning how to use the 788.

Thanks guys,

dtb

i should be gettin mine any day now....and im shittin me pants waiting! i have no doubts it will kick ass!

messsa,

cool, I can't wait myself.

welcome to the site!

First of all, congrats to everyone awaiting arrival of their 788!

I just got my unit Friday, and even though I haven't had much time to play with it, I have to admit to being smitten. :)

So far, it has performed flawlessly with nary a glitch, and is very well behaved with the CDW that I assembled from OEM components.

Is anyone else planning to assemble their own CDW instead of getting the retail version? I would definately recommend going this route if you are at all comfortable with computer components. You can save some serious $$ over the retail price of the CD-W788.

Good luck and please post when your 788's arrive!
