I have a chance to get a 788 locally but I want to do a quick test on it, with the seller there to make sure it's working:

I only have cassette experience where I would record a couple words on each track, and play them back

What would you recomend, for the most efficient way to to make sure it's working and look for trouble with out spending an hour and ticking off the seller???

Thanks,
Dave

The quick answer is have the owner demonstrate the functions for you.

Another idea is to download the manual & read up a bit, so you'll know basically what to expect & won't be going in there cold.

There is a way to take a single mic input and route it to all 8 recorded tracks simultaneously, for a quick test-1-2-3,... but I couldn't give you a step by step with out reviewing the manual and 788 quick tests I did previously. It's actually not that hard, and the 788's interface isn't that difficult to figure out.

If I get a few extra minutes, I'll check it out & post back later.;)

Just ask the owner to record a few test tracks and play them back, and that would be a good start.;)

That's a good idea about the manual, I will read it tonight. Off hand do you know any trouble spots I could look for. I'm only familiar with analog where belts rollers, heads can wear out etc, I guess the only moving part exept for knobs and sliders is the hard drive, right?

Thanks,
Dave

Yeah,...

I'd be most concerned that it boots up cleanly and will record/play with minimal hassle. Check the version number. It should be at least 1.10, but I think 2.0 is latest, (not sure/will check). Having the latest firmware will avoid many issues,... probably goes without saying.

The other thing in general would be any flakiness or crackliness of the mic inputs, headphone outputs, any other I/O jack like Line-/Aux-, etc, as well as the general cleanliness, all the buttons function and sliders and pots are noiseless.

;)

Good points! I'll check them all. It is OS 2.2 so that part is good.

Thanks,
Dave
