Adding a mic to the locker boys... I don't add often, every 5 years or so. I have the Rode NT-2 and NT-3. I like them both, but want something a little warmer and richer for vocals- allthewhile versatile for both genders. I have a great little preamp (***eliminates the replies about warmth, rich, etc.***) So... if you were in my shoes, which condensor would you purchase? Or, better yet, what do you love thats versatile enough? Heard good things about Blue and the Shure KSM. Look forward to hearing back from you! BTW, the NT-2 is a smidgeon harsh on the ladies!!!

Probably more than $700 new, but used...

KSM44
AT4050

For a different purpose AT4022 has my interest. Low noise and high SPL in an SDC with a semi-flat EQ curve. Could the specs be true?

Have you tried a MXL v67g yet? I haven't, but it seems popular for your purpose on the cheap. NT1a? Or those NTK / NT2000 things if you really like the Rodes. Lots of brands and vendors more than willing to take your cash out there.

i know you're asking for condensers but my sm7b gets more use than anything else...

you couldn't get much more versatile and i'd say there's a rich warm sound in there...

Hope that's useful.

buying a 700 mic without several thousand dollars in mixer, processors, pre's.............etc ( well a real studio )
you will not hear any real difference

try the sennheiser condenser MK4 - only 299 and may deliver what you want - I record on EV mics such as the RE-410 - the sound an quality is beautiful for vocals

Man, its hard to drop 1k on a mic, but I am seriously considering the KSM44. I'll check out that EV though, see what folks are saying about them. Be best if I purchase through web from a big guy, at least I can send it back for another one if I don't like...

Got enough Rodes in my locker I think- I want to try something else- I like what I hear about the KSM44 but 1k is a tough bill to throw down on a mic... Thanks again!

Well $1K is like going without a cell phone for year (or less). Or without cable for a year. It's a large sum, but it depends on your POV. If you can turn around and sell it 20 months later for $800, effectively $10 a month rent. For that matter $100 a tank of gas (or will be shortly), bi-monthly. Ride a bicycle instead and you can save thousands of dollars a year, literally. Yeah, it's a lot of cash (i.e. beer / pizza). But on the other hand, it's not. It'd take what? 30 minutes to drop that kind of cash in a casino? On the "quarter" slots.

;) How did you know I played the quarter slots?!

I know your right man, and after I purchased my first mic- which I dropped $400 on for it, I never missed it- so I know it will be the same, or close anyway~ I always get the buyers remorse unless it just wows me- I need something that wows!!!

That is a fantastic mic, tried it at a trade show and loved it. The best thing about it is that your vocal stays true no matter on your distance to the mic. You always get the same sound even when your vocalist backs off. The curve remains the same.
