anyone know if Alesis 5.1 studio montoring system is any good? should i put that in my control room it's only 400.00 bucks... not bad... but are the speakers bad?

I don't know of a single "good" monitor ever produced by Alesis....

Look at the Genelecs or the JBL LSR25s instead if you're serious about setting up surround......

I looked into surround mixing a few months ago, it quickly became very clear that making the step up to surround is a $40,000 investment. Right now there just isn't any usable homerecording-type surround gear.

Some of the most innovative steps in the use of surround surround came from engineers and artists messing about with whatever they could find to get surround.

See Pink Floyd's early quadrophonic shows and Brian Eno's 3 speaker set-up, the earlier copies of On Land had details of setting up a differential speaker system which enhanced the feeling of the music surrounding the listener. These details not included on later pressings or on the CD. The system that Eno described works in much the same way as a simplified passive Dolby Surround Sound System. Basically you take the L and R as normal, then wire the third Differential speaker to the L+ and R+ terminals. Here you go:

Anything even getting towards surround is cool by me.

But I suppose it all comes down to what kind of results you need to obtain from it - a professional set-up will cost, but if you just want to dabble - the Pro Active's are better than the Creative/Cambridge Audio works set-up for example.

Interetsing topic - surround.

Stu :)

well, you could just buy 5 of the typical project-studio (be it tannoy's, yorkville's, mackies, whatever) level monitors plus a sub... design your own surround system. if you went the yorkville route, you could probably have a system setup for under $1500 US and it would sound one hell of a lot better than those Alesis speakers.
