HELP! The channel faders on my 488 are cutting out on me - I can get them to work by jiggling them, but this is not a pleasant problem to have. Is this something I can fix by lifting the lid and screwing around with it or is it a servicable problem for the pros. (Both master faders and selected individual channels are doing it, and seem to be getting worse). What makes that happen, anyway? Anyone?

depending on how serious it is, they might just need to be cleaned.

not to patronize u or anyone, but a can of air, the ones you use to clean electronics or computer keyboards MAY be able to help a bit....dust is a studio owners arch nemesis (right up there with NOISE!!!)

Hey man - I'm having a similar problem with my 488 - Except it happens more in the tape cue for track 1. When I try to turn up the tape cue nob it cuts out like a bad connection is occuring inside somewhere(it sounds like badly connected headphones into a walkman where you have to keep adjusting and jimmying the wires where it goes into the input except its on the nob itself) And sometimes track one doesn't record right. It fades in and out. But then other times it is just fine. I don't know.

By the way SlapBack - You gave me some advice a while back about using the stereo channels like 9-10 and 11-12 or whatever to plug my processor into making a kind of loop. And that seem to work fine. But i'm trying to figure out why -when I try to mix back through the processor - it doesn't allow me much PAN control for each track- I'm not sure if I should be using different inputs - cause it seems like there's a lot of different configurations it can be set for.

And what is it doing when you use the effect nobs - it sounds to me like it I turn the top nob up and it gets so loud and then i turn up the bottom effects nob and the signal just gets louder(the top and bottom nobs being for each individual track) is this all it is supposed to do?

I'm not sure if I'm being clear enough. But anybody who can give info will go on my christams list this year.

hey maybe those 488s are just not made well.....those 1'4" inputs on those things are only threaded in there, and pretty loosely at that---maybe the connectors just have a short somewhere....

as far as the problem with thew effects loops....when u turn it up , does it just get louder---or does it get louder AND sound processed? im not really sure of the layout of that board but its very possible you might have the switch set to cue instead of effect 2...thats how the 424 is set up and its easy to forget to switch that thing back to effect when your ready to mix.....i dont know...just a guess

Darkhorse - are you using stereo returns back into the mixer (two mono cables joined with a Stereo Y-connector)? If so, the signal is being sent stereo to two channels (9-10, or 11-12), thus affecting your panning functions. Try using just a mono return (one mono cable out of the left output of your processor, which will return the signal mono, giving you more control over panning the processed signal.

As for the effects knobs, the top knobs you use for overall level (read loudness), and the bottom knobs are for controling amount of returned signal (read stength of mixed dry\wet signal). Hope that makes sense. Email me if I didnt answer you Q correctly.
