48 vs 44khz Recording

Ok, here's my dumbass question.

My soundcard'll do either 44.1khz or 48khz. Is there a notable difference between the two? Seems like adding an extra 4,000 samples won't help much when you're already doing 44,100! I dunno.

Ummmmmmm, beg to differ here Dragon.

ANYTIME you can start out with a better resolution or better sampling rate, the end result is going to be better.

I have A/B recordings going directly to my Marantz CD burner using my Fostex DAT converters then light pipe optical to the CD burner. I tried 44.1 and 48. At 48, the Marantz needed to do a sample rate conversion to knock it down to 44.1 Tell you what, the 44.1 samples stuff lacked that same detail and depth. The high end spashed more.

Just about any software will let you do a sample rate conversion. I would recommend recording and mixing at 48, then save a different version of the mix with a sample rate conversion to 44.1 to burn CD's with. You will never when you may decide that something sounds good enough to take it to a mastering house. There, the best possible quality you can offer them would be best for your song.

Does it depend on the dithering technique used in the conversion from 48 to 44? It would seem to me that if, for instance, you were to remove same 4000 samples you gained in the 48k recording, you'd end up with exactly what you would have gotten with a 44.1k recording.

Of course it probably doesn't work that way. Thoughts?

I don't think the concept of dithering works here. It is simply sample rate conversion.

I am not sure of the inner workings of it, but I know that 48kHz stuff sounds better when it is sampled down than 44.1 stuff does.

I would still recommend it unless you have harddrive storage problems.
