464 ping pong prob

hello all ,was hoping someone could help me.After recording drums, bass and guitar onto tracks 1,2 and 3 respectively, I found that I could'nt bounce them onto track 4.Although there was a signal going into track 4 , when I went to play it back there was no sound on that track.I followed the manual to the letter quite a few times but with no luck.I'm using a tascam portastudio 464 .Hope someone out there can help , Thanks J.D

First thing to check is the position of the SYNC switch on the back of the 464. next to the DBX NR switch. The SYNC should be "off", as this uses track 4 for MIDI time code.

john - sometimes you can find another used 4 track for 70 bucks or even less. if you got a second deck. you could record 4 tracks on one then
bounce to 2 tracks on second and while bouncing add more live tracks.
to the mix going to 1/2 on the second deck. thus leaving tracks 3/4 on
the second deck to record on. then you could mix from second deck the 4 tracks back to 1/2 on the first one and add two more tracks on 3/4.

just as an idea. if you ever get a computer i use a superb package that will let you record up to 48 tracks on a pc (2ghz pc recommended with 512 ram) .

Check the basics first!

Always make sure you are arming the 4th track to actually record and then press the record and play buttons to actually do the bounce.

Seeing meter movement alone is not an absolute guarantee that the recording is taking place. It is only indicating that the first 3 tracks are pointed in the right direction to go there.

Kind of like aiming a gun with a laser site but not actually pulling the trigger.
