464 meters show lo level when input is hi

I just bought this machine. I'm not able to get a 0db reading on the 464 meter even when the recording level is set correctly. I've noticed that some channels read higher than others. So far I've used the phones to try and estimate the level. Is this a known characteristic of the 464? Is there anything I can do to help the situation? Thanks for your help zmaag
 
You are getting signal, but not high enough? What is the source? Microphone with the pre trim all the way up? Or instrument?

What about playback?

There. I've asked more questions than you did! But you can't tell if there's a problem without those answers.

Try cleaning your heads, see if you get better levels then.
 
Being a second hand unit, it's also possible that the previous owner monkeyed with the internal calibration adjustments for reasons known only to him. Unless of course, you ask them the history of the piece. :cool:

Another possible issue might be the dbx system being on or off and that may affect the meter's readings depending on if it's on or off. With the dbx on, the meters may be monitoring the signal, post dbx processing, and this would be a true reading of the dbx process in action which is normal and should not be compensated for by flooring levels to get the meters to go as high as you are hoping for.

If the dbx in bypassed and the levels are still low then there might be calibration issues.

You might want to seek out a qualified service center and see about getting a calibration procedure done to bring it back to factory spec. As a new owner, you might feel more confident about your projects too if you get a clean bill of health from a technician on your unit.

Channel one meter reads low even when the volume in the headset on that channel is high. This happened when I was following manual instructions for using the mixer and recording to track #1. The machine shows the same low meter reading on track #1 when I play a tape which the previous owner made. All three channels sound equally loud on playback - he/she only used three channels - guitar was on track #1 with him/her, mike was on track #1 when I tried it. Thanks zmaag
 
Should have read the message I sent you a few more times: guitar was SOURCE for track one when he/she recorded it, mike was SOURCE for track one when I recorded it. zmaag
