I was discussing the following scenario with friends of mine who own a solid recording studio.
I scored an Alesis Masterlink which is an amazing piece of equip INMHO. I am considering dumping 4 tracks from my 424 to it and bouncing it back to stereo channels and adding 4 more tracks. My friend told me I should have spent the Masterlink money on a better quality source of recording, as I was going to be "polishing a turd" with this idea.
Obviously he is not crazy about the portastudio. Anyway, I figured if I recorded on to the Masterlink at about -10db and bounced it back, it should work just fine. I mean isnt that what the adats were used for?
any thoughts on this?
also, i scored a free alesis 3630 compressor. With my tape decks, i really dont need to compress anything, but Im using it for a noise gate . Im going to chain it between my mixer and the masterlink when I mix down for the noise gate function. I wonder if it will void out tape hiss?
speaking of tape hiss, why is it considered such an evil thing nowadays. Who really gives a shit if you hear some tape hiss? doesnt a compressor, philisophicallyoliollilly kill a musicians dynamics?
is everything supposed to sound the same nowadays? what happened to good radio?
hows come i cant find a Girard turntable at any resale shops?
