at the moment my technique (or lack there of really
is to run an instrument cable either from the 4track's headphone jack or tapecueout to the linein on my computer using a 1/8 adapter
and recording with audactity on that
but its extremly noisey
im not sure what imasking here maybe like is that correct?

ive seen a bunch oftopics about this 4track with replies about "mixing down"
but i dont really understand it let alone the manual

actual about the noiseyness im thinking imight not have had the levels downof the other tracks
thinking it was neccesary to be able to hear them play while irecord another track

so could anyone kind explainthe mixdown thing as simplified as possible

id appreciate thanks if youeven read this :o

Use the line out jacks on the 4 tk, not the monitor or headphone jack.

That's the best starting point. You may need to buy a new adaptor or two from Radioshack, in order to plug into your soundcard, but it'll be worth it.

Then just mix to taste. You will be able to use the faders to adjust volume this way, ignoring the tape cue knob (unless you are adding fx, which it sounds like you shouldn't be messing with at this point). Just turn that knob to zero. adjust your EQ and panning, and if you recorded anything decent, it should sound good if you mix it well.

Also, if you're using a stock soundcard on your computer, it's gonna sound crappy no matter what.
