388 help

turned the 388 on and it make a noise and the capstan doesn't turn --any ideas???

I assume you loaded the tape and only hear the motor but the capstan doesn't spin ? Open the bottom of the unit and check the capstan belt. Most likely it came off and is badly stretched or has turned to goo. If you find this is so, call TASCAM Parts Department @ (323) 727-4840 and order the capstan belt for the 388. Before replacing the belt, make sure you use at least 90% alcohol and some cotton to clean off the places where the belts rides on so that they will be nice and clean (and dry) before you slip the new belt on.
