My beloved 388 has stopped recording on track 8. it happened really suddenly.if i record on it there is a faint signal of what i just played, but not a lot else. does anyone know of any places in the UK (or maybe even abroad) that will be able to fix it?
any help would be most welcome.

Have you meticulously cleaned the heads and all transport guides, posts, capstan and pinch roller?

It doesn't take a lot of dirt to lose a channel on an 1/4 inch, 8 track format!

Cheers! :)

Make sure the Ch 8 dbx defeat switch is not engaged.

Then maybe go through a routine of reseating the audio cards.

That's all I can think of, besides more techical stuff, like chasing signals with a scope.

A Reel Person,

I have cleaned the heads very well on this 388 but the playback head is squeaking like bat!! I have to take a swab and push the tape flat aganst the head for it to stop. Is there anyway I can just reset the head so this does not happen and how to?

Cheers!!!

joe are you sure the 8 track defeat switch is not on??I talked to tascam a few days ago -you should be using Quantegy 457 only not 456

yea mine was sqeekin like that they changed the pinch roller and maybe ajusted things -runs ok now -how old is that tape-the tech kinda yell at me for using ten year old tape

Sometimes,...

older tape stock can cause this type of squeal, drag, loss of play motion and/or signal loss. Make sure it's not the tape. /DA

Yea it's over ten year old tape and most of the 40 tapes had no Squeak (so far). I so needed to bounce this tape to DP4.12 I had to take a cotton swab and held it against the tape along the play head just right and the squeak seem to go away and the material is now on hard disk.
