I record on a Yamaha MT8X cassette 8track (yeah, yeah...it was cheap and it's simple). I have a couple sm57s and a studio condenser I'm borrowing from a friends, I'm also borrowing a little mixer of his and using it for it's preamps...I'm looking to get a 2-channel preamp (I record electric drums straight in on the stereo channel so I don't need more than 2 right now). I'm always working on a budget...so I'd like to know what preamp I should buy to match the level of gear I'm working with (cassette 8track and sm57s). the behringer ultragain looks good to me because of it's extra EQ on the front...and the tubes (although I know that doesn't really mean anything, especially on a 99 dollar preamp) the ART 2channel rack model looks good too, it's a bit more and doesn't have the EQ, but I'm guessing it would give me better results (as everyone I know who has used an ART tube preamp has fallen in love with them). I'm not attached to the idea of having a tube preamp, especially on the budget I'm working with (100-400). sugjestions? thanks!

The M-Audio DMP-3 is a good buy at $200. It's just a pre-amp. No additional features like EQ or compression. A lot of people around here use the ART MP stuff. It comes in a lot of different varieties, and I think some are better than others. Someone that owns one will have to speak up on that. I think the best deal around is the FMR audio RNMP, though it's closer to $500, which is why I don't have one.

Twist

I was kind of surprised at the PR8. It sounds quite decent, comparable to the pres in the Aardvark 24/96. I've seen the PR8 as cheap as 200...but I haven't been able to find that price anymore. Except at zzounds, where it's currently backordered...

From what you've said, I'd probably go with the audiobuddy too...

thanks for your sugjestions! the audio buddy and the DMP3 both look good. Also...I found the midiman audio buddy (black one with ulgy yellow writing) on musicians friend, and the silver m-audio one on m-audio.net ....the silver one was 119 or so, and the black one was 80, is there a difference between the two other than the casing?

so I'm assuming if I go with m-audio over behringer, I wont have the little EQish features, but I'll get a better preamp.

I have the behringer...

And I like it a lot. The EQ has been very useful and the signal coming out is extremely clean.

Oh, speaking of Behringer...I use a UB1202 for preamps and general routing of synths and I think my B1 sounds comparable to the DMP3 or Aardvarks. While I've never had a problem with the audio buddy, I'm just looking at the audio buddy voltage thread right now, and kind of surprised that that thing was THAT low. OTOH, I haven't tried it with that many mics. I basically use mine for recording away from home with ECM8000s and CAD GXL1200s and it seems to work fine.

Man, I'm really showing my true colors with these cheapy mics... ^^;; The joys of college...
