I have a delta 410 soundcard, which should allow me to select 24 bits in the settings, but when I try playback n track tells me the soundcard doesn't "accept the required format," which the help file says means that the soundcard just can't handle 24 bits

is the recording quality affected at all by whether 16 or 24 is selected?

Let's back up a step, Emp.

- Your card is 24-bit capable.. good.
- Do you own (and have registered) the 24-bit version of N? It's a $20 upgrade from the basic program.
- Did you tell N to record 24-bit (Recording LED.. Settings buttons for both pairs)?

yes, there's a quality diff between the two. If you can get 24-bit working, you'll notice a diff.

I'm def using the 24 bit version of n track

To test 24 bit, I'm just hitting settings and changing from 16 to 24, which then gives me playback issues

Gotcha. Have you tried 24 - Left Justified? Depends on your card and how the drivers are written.

I've tried 24, 24 unpacked and left-justified and none work

Stating the obvious, are you sure you are selecting the right card in the preferences? (In case more than one soundcard is installed in the computer)

Ok, let's back up a step. Can you get everything working at 16-bit? I'd try that.. close N.. change everything back to 24-bit and try again.

Be sure you change both the Recording LED setup and the Playback LED setup.

wow, this will seem pretty stupid, but I didn't even realize there were two different setting tabs, I was just doing the playback one. That one still gives me issues, but I switched the recording one to 24 bit left-justified and it works fine... so, I thank you for pointing out there are two. Still confused why the playback one only will accept 16 bit, though.

Hmmmm.. Not sure. If your Playback device is the same as your Record device, you should have 24-bit as an option. Are you sure you have the same card selected for both (Ctrl-P.. Audio Devices)?

If you've got everything selected right and still can't select 24-bit, i'd begin to suspect that your sound card drivers aren't installed correctly.

Might be worth looking at again.
