I recorded a singer/guitarist "live" & he wants "more bass" in his voice. All I know is to use e q & it doesn't sound that great to me + it boosts the guitar as well. I know to make 2 copies & e q one for voice & one for gtr but I can't seem to put bass in the voice that wasn't there to begin with.

secondly - there was quite a bit of dynamic range in his voice so some parts of the file are pretty quiet. I add 3 db gain ( one of the options in cakewalk), then normalize & then add compression in that order. I know there are strong opinions about normalization...

Any thoughts? Thanks - I always learn fr you guys.

I doubt if you'll be able to eq his voice without also affecting whatever else got printed to that track.

I've done some live recordings myself and noticed that a lot of singers don't have great mic technique. They turn their head, step back, sing some words louder than others, etc. I've used volume envelopes to compensate somewhat.

Like Eddie said, it will be hard to change the voice without affecting something else also.

But one thing to keep in mind is that, just because he says "more bass", he might really mean "fuller" or "rounder". So you might be able to make him happy and not ruin the mix by finding which frequencies to CUT, not boost, to GET RID of whatever is making it not "full" or "round"....which he interprets as "more bass".
