I have been gone awhile with dealing with life. Anyway, I got some new stuff and recorded a couple of tunes with it. I used the MXL 57 (on vocals and harp) and a core sounds stereo binuaral mic(on the guitar) through a behringer mixing board, to a sharp MD-7 mini disc. I panned one left (MXL),and one right. I added a bit of reverb and delay on the vocal channel, compression on both channels, andthen mixed on the Cool Edit Channel Mixer: both=left. The vocals distorted a bit. I had the line in level on the mini disc too high. What do you think for a first attempt? Walter

They are on the singles section

Walter Tore's Spontobeat. All words and music spontaneously created. Over 1 million compositions and growing.

A few out of tune vocals
The rythem guitar seems too quite compared to the vocal. I know its not loud enough because my foot isnt tapping to it The harmonica playing is A+ real blues but it sounds too sweet. Its just my opinion but this type of song would benefit from a gritty, slightly distorted mean sounding harmonica. I think the green bullet mic from sure would do that.

The recording sounds good to me there is nothing that tips me off it was recorded at home. nice

WALTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tasteful and original as always.:D :D :D
I'm listening to Hoo Doo right now.
I LIKE the new setup.
We are slowly turning you into a tech:D :D :D :D
I'm doin quite well, still on disability probably till the end of the year.

When are we gonna hear from you with your bassist and drummer???????????????????

Dan

Hoo Doo is a great song. I like that style of song writing, spit firing words that rock against the rythem track.

(Jerry Lee Lewis was a real master of this type of song...and also one of my favorite performers of all time)

The recording quality is really good, especially considering you captured the performance with room mics
great job all around.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

tjohnston: I agree the guitar needs to be up more. The problem I was having using on 1 mic was too much guitar. I will continue to mess with that.

Heavy: Thanks for the listen. I am as techi as I am going to get-I hope! I have been bogged down in a mess of harrassment at work, my drummer is also a sped teacher bogged down in starting the new year, and my bassist is playing a lot with his main band. In other words, Walter hasn't gone pounding the pavement for band gigs. Solo is easy-no nothing but playing. I will get on that soon. I am glad to see you are doing ok.

jimmistone: Thanks for the comparision to the Killer! I was actually thinking of Chuck Berry on that tune. The words just poured out and I captured a picture of Chuck in my mind as I sang. I am going back to the drawing board tonight with the mics if I get the inspiration.

Thanks Walter

Nice, man. The recordings adequately capture the style and feel of the music.

Guitar is a little low in the mix. But that doesn't ruin the listen.

what to do when the dogs are howling and you are trying to record?

What to do when the dogs are howling and you are trying to record? Sing The Howling Dog Blues! Me and my harp do a lot of howling and barking back at the neighbors dogs who were barking as I was recording, so I did these tunes.

I did this with the MXL V57 panned center for vocals/harp, fender PA mic panned center, for guitar, core sound mic about 6 feet away on ceiling panned R & L. I think these sound better. What do you think? Thanks

Walter

Da blooooooooooooze..............cool!

Hound Dog Blues - Cool tune - disjointed yet rhythmically fluid - and I sense some real animosity in your voice - 'half in earnest, half in jest' as they say. Solid mix - tightly focused. Very nice playing - convincing vocals!!

Voodoo Cafe - the harp might be a little strident there - comes across hot on the high end both on the speakers and definitely in the cans. The guitar sounds thin in contrast. Another super tight mix which helps me visualize you singin', playin' and, occasionally, stompin'! And yes, I liked the setup/sound better on "Hound Dog Blues."

My Wife Has Cancer

Fantastic. Brilliant performance, amazing use of the harp and resonator.

Life can yield some amazing performances and you have written yourself into this one.

As far as the mix goes, there might be a touch of boominess, the lower frequencies of your voice seem a bit pronounced.

But overall the mix is smoother, rounder, fuller, and is generally an increase in quality. I hear room ... room ... for it to get even better, whereas what you had, you were close to using all of what you could get from that.

Ya ain't gettin' older Walter, ya gettin' better !

Thanks for pouring your heart out and living for us.

Thanks guys! I have learned a lot from you all. My friend Oren has been helping understand all this technical stuff. He advised me to move the guitar mic to the 12th fret. I had it on the soundhole. I will keep messing with it all and hope to get a recording of my band with set up soon. Walter

Ooh yeah,

Great stuff. On Hoo doo, the guitar needs to come up, still totally awesome stuff. the harp might be a bit hot. I know it's hard to do anything about that--maybe physically lean back when blowing.

Careless me-- guitar is a bit louder, could still come up. Love the vocals, harp is a bit hot again--not bad, but it surpasses the voice in volume in contrast. I always feel the loudest thing in this type of music should be the vocals.

I always enjoy your postings. They are very grounding--part of everything.

Sloop: Thanks for the compliment! I have taken the advice here and done a new tune. I will post it seperate. Walter

Checked out HoDo. The guitar seems like it's hidden in the back, like you're on stage and the guitar player is sitting on a chair behind you but he's not plugged in. Decent enough tune for standard blues.

Wife has cancer - Wow, there is some real despair in the vocal, I think you nailed it here, I can feel the pain. When the harmonica comes in it's great.
