Just be aware that not all preamps with "phantom" actually supply 48 volts. The AudioBuddy by M-Audio is a good example. It's a pretty decent starter two channel preamp that retails for around $75, but the phantom voltage it provides is more on the order of 24 volts. "So what?" you ask? Well, if you were planning to record something with loud, sharp transient response (like a snare drum), the signal will wind up being "clipped" (distorted) because the mic can't receive enough current to capture the signal. It won't have enough "headroom"... the peak of the signal "bumps it's head" and is chopped off... not a nice thing for a snare track or a human!
