Hello all.
Im about to begin a recording for some friends of mine, and I'm using this as an excuse to go out and buy a half decent preamp. I've been using the inputs on my old TASCAM mixer, which sadly is now in another state, so I've only got the mic pres on the front of my C-PORT, which for all intents are completely useless. I need at least a two channel pre but I don't have an unlimited budget. At the very most I could maybe stretch to $200US, but I' have to get it shipped as well, so any thing cheaper would be good. the project is mainly guitar and voice, and the pre will be used with Rode NT3's, a MXL v67G, a SP b1 and sm57's. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks.

i got the m-audio dmp3 a while back......it's solid

the m-audio dmp3 for $200.
i've also heard good stuff about the studio projects vtb-1, but i haven't tested one out yet.

Besides the DMP3, another good dual mic pre is the (discontinued)
Aphex 107. They sell for under well under $150 on e-bay typically,
Be aware, however, that it just has XLR inputs, and was designed
for balanced inputs, rather than line inputs.

Maybe a used Mackie 1202? I just dumped one for 250, but maybe you could find one for 200?

If you are going to buy locally (ie in Australia) you will find that m-audio products are relatively expensive compared to the US. Behringer are much more competitive. The Ultragain mic2200 two channel pre is available for around Aust$200 and has been recommended by a number of regulars on the harmony central forums who prefer it over the Audio Buddy.

I just bought a DMP3 from GC for $119. I don't know if all of them are selling them for that, but the one here is. I like it very much.

Blessings, Terry

If you need no bells and whistles just go with the Audio Buddy, which can be had for well under half your maximum budget.

Thanks guys for all the help, although I really like the DMP3, I will probably go for the behringer, simply because I can get it so much cheaper, and It will do the job for now. Down the line I can go up to the DMP3 or even something better( I think the Studio Projects VTB2 looks interesting, so maybe once thats been released I will have saved up enough for it...)

The Presonus bluetube can be very good. My experience with it, though, is the quality control sucks. If you get a good one, it's typically quite good, with a decent noise floor. Too many out there, especially in the used market, have a really high noise floor, though. If you've a place with a good return policy, you might want to try one.

The DMP3 is a very good pair of pres. I've not tried the Behringer Ultragain. I'm quite happy with what I've done with Behringer's UB mixers, mine and others'. Much better than the MX stuff.

I ended up going with the audio buddy because it was also available from the same store I was ordering a V67G from, and it saves me on shipping. I've found the Ultragain locally fairly cheap so I will pick that up when I get paid next. all in all the two preamps will cost me roughly was I was planning to spend, but I get a lot more flexiblity. thanks for all your help guys!
