I've been recording in 24bit 48khz for a while...
I DO notice a difference... And I like the sound I get...
Mostly in the "headroom" when I'm recording someone...
If I record in 16bit - my system seems to "max out" if I have a strong vocalist more quickly...
Using 24bit - I get just a tad more clarity when recording...
I think that I get a better handle on a final mix when recording vocals, etc. in 24bit... (PLEASE understand I'm not snobbing here and I'm splitting hairs)...
HOWEVER - It must be understood that whatever bit DEPTH you record in - It's all going to get smashed into a 16bit 44.1Khz anyway...
AND - There's a DISTINCT possibility that your recordings may be further smashed into a compacted MP3 file as well... (Gawd - That's a WHOLE 'nother debate!)
So it's really up to you as to what decision you make...
If you're doing home stuff - and having a good time - AND LIKE WHAT YOU HEAR - for pete sake just stay with 16bit 44.1k ... As stated earlier - There are other areas you can improve your system that will give you far more mileage in strengthening your system...
Above all - Enjoy yourself - People make lots of music in far stranger ways than with traditional recording - And some make a huge amount of money doing it that way...
