Due to my oddly shaped basement i was trying to find decent room sizes for a control room. while i know that room is small, the nodes don't seem that bad. Am i missing something. intuition tells me it would be bad since the ceiling and width are close dimensions...
am i doing the calcs wrong in mode calc?

Ryan

Despite the 2 simillar dimensions, at least on the calculator I´m using, you´re not in a bad shape (but you´re near)

I have almost the same situation in my room...after 14 bass traps and clouds (and I need more:D) all it´s ok;
what I´m trying to say is that, anyway, you´ll need the treatment ...;)

Just my opinion, but forget about Modal analysis of your space. True analysis is difficult even for trained experts. More important is to keep your room as large as possible, treat it for the rooms purpose(ie..control room..early reflection point absorption and basstraping in the corners floor to cieling and or at wall/cieling corners) and for control rooms, placing your mix position on the long axis with speakers on an equalateral triangle geometry with the mix position..etc etc. Tons of info here....

Bottom line...modal stuff is over rated for small Home studios. At least from my perspective.

Couldn't agree more. When you're that small and it's not a cube, get as much space as you can.

Bryan

Thanks for the advice. I'm so paranoid about doing something wrong it's taking all the fun out of creating the space... sometimes i need to step back and say hey it's a basement studio!!! there's so much info here and on salyers site it's hard to realize what's important and what's not...

looking at it now it think i'll try a sound proof(ish) drum room and keep the rest open so a drum/live area 12x8 and then a 12 x 26 are for CR etc...
Plus makes more sense if i ever sell my house...

Any other info that's not so important for basement guy's?

Thanks Again,
Ryan

Can you post a plan, as exists and as proposed?

This is where it DOES get important.;)

Well, that depends on what you are trying to achieve. But, I'd say a Lava Lamp ain't too important.:D....OOPS:eek: thats heresy around these parts! I might get tarred and feathered for that statement!:p

plans Don't laugh

Rick,
I tired sketchup, but couldn't quite figure out the 3-D stuff, so this is my basic floor plan in excel.

The parts in gray i have to work around there is a storage area which has the furnace and water heater, then i need to build another closet that would have the electric panel and the sewer termination. my HVAC trunk runs through the control room ( it's marked) so i will have to soffit that, and the sewer pipe that runs against the wall ( also marked). the drawing suck but gives you the general idea...

okay i'm still trying to figure out how to attatch since i can't use exel files and the word .doc is to big...
Ryan

Finally

OK revised Plan...
The image quality is not great, but hopefully you can make it out...
I tried to be specific, but I know you'll have questions.
Thanks guys...

Ignore the 12 X 10 dim in the HVAC area... misplaced dim
Sorry

Truly soundproofing those spaces will not be inexpensive and needs to be done during the framing stage. You also need to consider electrical 'holes' and HVAC as part of the solution.

Bryan

Yes panda you have had designs i have been kicking around since last march...

I will try to take some picks tonight...

the Hvac "soffit" is the main trunk and return. along with the line set and sewer drain pipe... I ran it all together so "one" day when i finished it i could just soffit around it..

I was really thinking of Fitz 's advice and making a larger control room and have 1 drum room more or less... I have like 30 office cubicle's that seem to have some kind of rigid fiberglass in the middle of them so i was thinking of adding some 703 and using GoBo's at the tail end of the control room if needed....

P.s. I think i can make the "live" room a little longer ( there is another half of the basement no represented on my sketch) maybe 14 x 8 or so...

also only wanted to keep it 1 live room for costs, that's the only room i'm concerned with sound "dampening". i know i am not going to proof it just want the roar of 110dbc down to like 60...

I tried to title the pics as too the view. ie CR entry would be the view as you walk into the CR door, Storage would be through the storage door, etc..
