$1000 setup

OK, I'm not really a newbie, but I could do with some advice

I'm looking to get a setup for recording for just $1000, small I know but It's all I've got

Thing is, should I aim for a DAW or HD, or find someway of using a laptop (already possessed) and Cakewalk Pro Audio9? My problem with Computers is I always think they'd get loads of hiss and fuzz but I may well be wrong. Should I go for an external mixer to port into the computer? Cheers guys!

I'd go with the computer. It's cheaper.

Well you have a complex question but you don't give us any info about the computer.

What processor and speed?
How much memory?
Hard disk size and speed?
What operating system?
Does it have USB, Fire wire?
How old is it?
What kind of recording do you want to do?
What gear do you already have?

There are a lot of options to record with and do a good job, But we need more information to be of any help to help you.

Computers dont generate those hiss and fuzz, it is the cheap soundcards that produces all those noises. Get a quality sounds card (usb/firewire), then you can build all the other stuff, one by one. Good Luck! (Hope your laptop is good enough to handle audio recordings)

Well, the problem is I could easily tell you about my computer that I'm typing on but it's actually my drummers laptop and I don't know all the information about it I'll do my best though:

What processor and speed? Around 1.2gz
How much memory? Not sure
Hard disk size and speed? Not sure
What operating system? Windows XP
Does it have USB, Fire wire? USB
How old is it? About one year
What kind of recording do you want to do? Indie-rock, but not traditional, so a lot of different styles together
What gear do you already have? All the instruments That's about it really

Thing is, I really had my eye on a VS-2480, so if I opt for the computer setup, I'd like to know that the quality of sound is just as good (if possible), and that it won't be let down by the laptop.

Got a large pair of "Pioneer" monitors which sound good, and some other smaller ones (but not sure these will be good enough).

I meant a HD system as in Protools or MOTU etc. Its looking more and more like a VS2480 at the moment though (Anyone wanna donate cash? )
