I've suffered that one.

Or worse the IWMBFIWANTHTBFPLD - I want my best whose a no talent hack in the band for political leverage disease.

Damn, thought I made that one up... :D

What about LSSWOITB...S (Lead Singers Sleeping With Others In The Band ... Sequentially) ... that one ruined a couple bands; though I got my turn ;)

or ...

OBMJOYSWTS (Other Band Members Jealous Of You Sleeping With The Singer)

Those are two nasty diseases ...

i usually make it a point to keep the band girl-free for just that reason.

Drugs, booze and prima donnas are a band's enemies.

That's why I record at home on the computer these days. No band members that I can't stand to tolerate. I'm never late for practice. I always play the songs that I like and I can even try singing them if I want to.

No ringing ears from a too loud drummer or "lead" guitarist. I love it.

No hassling with club owners over payment that wasn't enough at the agreed upon price, much less what they actually want to pay. No contending with a drunk that wants the band to play "Wipe Out".

Thanks to the internet, more people are hearing my alleged music than ever before.

Ah, bliss...

another bad disease is (NPTPTPWAS) "no places to play that pay worth a shit"
That one is turning into a nationwide epidemic.

eh...

Funny, I thought the breaker off bands was just women in general.....

Band members find girls and never "have time" to practice.... then get married...... and you never see them again.........

Hey guys, you overlooked something that has always bothered me about singers (I'm a guitarist with limited vocal abilities) If a singer is going to be an "equal" partner in a band they should also have an equal investment. I've heard so many complaints about the PA not being good enough (mostly from singers who don't have a cent invested in it) Those of us who play instruments have our life savings tied up in them and what does a singer bring into the mix? If they want to play with me they had better bring more than just their voice, I say if they want to sing they should also supply their share of the gear. (Bet no one else has ever noticed this though)

And they should also hump their share, as well.

everyone forgets why they play music or get in a band , its for the music , not to be someones boss , its all "JUST FOR FUN ", so get over the dumm shit

I'm in a band to play music for other people. To entertain. Ya ever heard of that????

After 25 years of playing in bands, I've found if someone isn't in charge, you won't have to worry about it because you won't be around long enough to gig. I don't even want to be "The boss" I just know these guys and if there is no direction, they will fall appart.

We told our singer, If you are not going to help setup/tear down, you are getting charged and we'll take it right off the top. He complied.

We had a great band in the early 90's. Got to do a stint with Ace Frehley, and played some big shows. We were killed by IDWTPTMBMVITV disease- I Don't Want To Practice Too Much Because My Voice Is Too Valuable Disease. I'm sorry, but its damn hard to get much better when your singer won't sing while you practice. ARRGGHH makes me nuts just remembering it. I finally couldn't stand it anymore and wigged. Looking back, if I could have held it for another 6 months, we would have been signed. No kidding. But, then how the hell would he sing 5-7 nights a week??? I'll post a tune or 2 if someone can tell me how to do it. We were damn good.......sigh

same here ...

we only play limited and we had a practice right before a gig and our singer did th same, he would barely sing and it would drag and stuff pissed me off, i told him if you're gonna do that we're not wasting th day before a gig...i also said the "how are you gonna sing every night" deal at him too ...we had a problem with him doing covers as well, in the beginning it was real good writing songs and then he kinda got bigheaded and when you would suggest a different line he would get all huffy and wouldn't write , thing is all the songs that people were saying were our best songs he had helped finish they weren't his ideas ...another thing that is creepinmg in is what i call the YOKO SYNDROME where the the wives tell you what you ought to play and what they think ,i'm sorry i'll make concessions but not because somebody's friend said "oooh this is a good song they should try this" especially when it's not even close to 90% of the material we do ...

i, myself have had to put up with grumpy bassists, guitarists, and singers. and im sure i havent been the best to get along with. what i have found that works best is to build a friendship with anybody you jam with, otherwise theres no chemistry and you blow all chances of making it. We have had people come up to us after shows and tell us how great it is that we put out a collective vibe. as our bass player likes to say " A band is like a hand...when all the members are working as one (like a fist), the initial blow will be more outstanding, but when the band is uncooperative and working individually (open palm)" what am i thinkin?? this analogy sucks.
Anyways...whenever we try to jam with someone we make sure there isnt any alchohol at practices, we allow drugs under no circumstances, and our girlfriends can only come to about one practice a month (if caught up). these seem to work well.
limited alchohol
no drugs at all!
and try to keep the ladies away while working.

I had some good times while gigging. Like someone else said, you gig for the music and the audience. When everyone in the band comes prepared, things go very smoothly. When someone thinks that they are the feature act and that everyone else should kiss their ass, things get nasty.

A born leader has no need of proclaiming such. People will automatically gravitate toward the person that is the best leader in the group. Good leaders are born, not developed by desire or ego. Most good leaders do not want to be the leader. Those that crave being a leader usually are not in the slightest sense, a leader.

I wish I had it all to do over again. My time was the seventies and could have lasted to the present day, had I known then what I know now about people and what is truly important.

I never stood a chance of "making it". Not only do you have to be really good at what you do, but you must have a certain look. I do not have that look and nothing will change that. But I could have made a handsome living in music, never the less.

Music is a vast field. Performing live is only a small part of that field.
