It's the smell..
I got hit with a question the other day that I really didn't have an answer for.

We've all used the little transformer coupled impendance matching 1/4" - XLR adapters. But, I've never used them for a condensor mic. What would the effects, be, if any, of running phantom thru one of these?

I don't think it would work, nor does it make sense. Any preamp with phantom power is going to have XLR input, and any condensor mic should be used with an XLR connector on the cable.

Transformers don't pass DC, so there would be no effect . . . that is, no sound . . . but if you have a phantom supply upstream of the adaptor then your condenser mic will work normally as will the adaptor.

Doh! I knew there was a reason I'd never considered this question.:D

Seems like I've seen a lot of rack-mounted 'microphone' mixers that only have a TRS input (I'm sure Shure makes some this way). I think the question is valid, but think about how a transformer works. DC does not transform (damn Tesla anyway) to get on the other side of the transformer.

What's a transformer coupled impedence matching 1/4" - XLR adapter ? Is it an adapter that is an XLR (male) at one end and a 1/4" (female) at the other ?
