What is the best 1/4" X 7" tape to get...Quantegy 456 or 457? and how much recording time does a reel have? this is for a tascam 388.

For the 388, get the 457. It's what TASCAM recommends - 1 mil. Other recommended tapes are the 407 and Maxell UD 35-90 (with or without "B") line.

anybody know where I can order 1/4" Quantegy tape for the cheapest/best price? I want to order about 15 reels.

In case anyone's interested about the situation in the UK, I decided to order a reel of 1/4" for general purpose, test mixdowns etc.

I placed the order with StudioSpares on Wednesday evening. Yesterday they phoned to say that they were out of stock, but expecting a shipment today.. realistically it should arrive next week.

This will be my first new (as opposed to e-bay) purchase since January.. it looks like the stuff is still rather scarce.

simple question for the newbie: how much recording time does 1/4" x 1200' tape get you (in minutes)/ or 1/4" x 1800' tape?

It depends on your tape speed. the formula is: feet of tape / tape speed in ips(inches per second)/ 12= tape time

The 388 travels at 7.5 ips, so that's 48 minutes for 1800 ft (slightly less to allow for some spool on each end)

I've just come across something rather interesting at rec.pro.audio, which I think bears repeating here.

Some of the newsgroup regulars were at the AES show. Apparently there were four tape manufacturers exhibiting at AES. Alongside Quantegy, RMGI and, ATR it looks like Zonal have risen from the grave, at least to some degree.

They don't seem to have a website as such, but apparently this is them:

..supposedly 'Moonshine' has arranged for a third-party manufacturer to produce tape according to the old Zonal formulas. Apparently only the 675 tape is currently available, in 1/4" and 1" configurations, but they are hoping to have their 700-series (456-compatible) tape available soon.
