003 rack distortion on line inputs 5-8

Hey all, I've had this problem for a while now but have not been able to diagnose it .. hopefully you guys can be of some assistance.

My line inputs on channel 5-8 have a distortion on the tracks. There is a point in the level that the signal will clip even though it is much below 0 db. The hardware providing the line signal is a m-audio dmp-3, dmp-2, and audio buddy. This distortion still occurs when either I have -10 or +4 input selected, so that is not the issue. Also, I have unbalanced cables connecting from the preamps output into the line ins.

Additionally, I have a tascam 388 and the line level output signal doesn't distort when used in the same way that I'm using the outboard preamps.

What is causing either my 003 or preamps to distort/"clip" even though they're operating much below 0 db?

firmware?

have you updated the firmware? i had this problem with mbox and mbox2 , all i had to do was do the update.

That would be a relief if this were the case. Though I havent updated within the past few months, I do believe I've updated fairly recently. I'll give it a try, thanks for the heads up.
