Is my Capstan supposed to be turning when the take up arm is down???

Yup, was the switch after all. I just removed it and shook it around then when I saw it worked with a buzz test put it back and it's working again. Must have been something stuck in there. Thanks for the help!

Is my Capstan supposed to be turning when the take up arm is down???

Thanks for the replies. There's a lever that engages when the take up arm moves up. It's it's own removable part below the take up arm. I disconnected the wires on that before and the capstan kept moving. So I'm thinking something went haywire in the capstan itself. Or in it's network of...

Is my Capstan supposed to be turning when the take up arm is down???

haha I just moved and re set up all my equipment and when I powered on the Ampex 440, with no tape on it I found the capstan is turning. I'm pretty sure it never did that before and only engaged when the take up arm was up!!

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

Hi izaakbinet, what did I post up there? haha If it was Sunday Afternoon, that was recorded on a Teac 2340sx with the Tascam M35. I'm a big fan of both of those pieces of gear.

    McCartney - the album

Love that album. I think it was pretty much covered above. Most of it at home, Maybe I'm Amazed finished in the studio. That's what I remember reading about it.

    Transfering 16track 1" to 24 track 2"

Maybe because the 3340 is portable, but doing it on the 16 track he has more room to mess around and tracks to pick from. Or it sounds better.

    New analog album!

Sounds great FB! I like the song I'm hearing now. Your voice sounds a little like Ryan from Guster. I like the band name and CD design too.

    Nice!

I got lost waaaaay back there. :D I will say that the process is "sketchy" with the Ampex and there is some timing issues now and then. So I've been doing a little of everything. The multitrack I use is a Roland VS1880. Not even sure if that is considered a DAW or not. Carry on! :D

    Nice!

Actually, I'd prefer a tape deck with more tracks ! .. ;) but I have to make do for now. Also do not like the tape off the playback head and then shifting trick. It was a drag. At least I can hear this back in real time and if it sounds good then it worked. But what exactly is being...

    Wow! Fast996. Looking good!

    Nice!

No, no nudging. I've tried that method and found it's a drag. Most of my songs are short so it's not an issue for me to change anything right now. But I don't understand how there'd be drift anyway because the time code is locked with the playback of the DAW, so if the tape slows down or...

    Nice!

It was a tambourine. I could probably get away with something not as percussive but I'll probably just stick to two. I'll have my basic tracks transferred over by that point anyway. So the rest is just extra. So far I've got 7 tracks dumped over and everything is :thumbs up: Sounds huge!

    Nice!

Yes, I do! I probably will do that mod. It's just 2 resisters and a cap. I guess I'll only be doing 2 tracks at a time because the track that abuts the stripe wont take it. But so far so good. It's working fine. Just dumped two down.

No input signal on my Teac 80

Oh, never mind. You fix it!

    Nice!

I thought that the Ampex 440 4 track wasn't slaving the DAW because of some sensitive speed issue or "wow" or something but it turned out it was the voltage difference between the ampex and the syncman. The syncman being set up for -10. They even have a mod in the syncman manual to run it at +4...
