Your usual steps when first mixing a song

I usually put up all the faders and run the mix through a distortion pedal for a few minutes. That way when I turn off the distortion pedal, everything sounds better than it did before and I'm not beating my self up so much about the crappy tracking job I just did. :)

    Motu 24i Problem

When you put your hand on the unit is it so hot that you can't keep you hand there? It could also be a driver issue. Is this a new problem? Try updating your drivers if you haven't already.

What mixer do you have and which do you love?

I have an Allen and Heath GL2400 that I sometimes use for tracking and it works well for me. I use a Soundcraft M4 for my monitor mix and it has some decent mic preamps in it too. If I were to use either as an actual mixer, I'd probably opt for the Allen and Heath because I think the EQ is...

    Korg PXR4 and Audacity

I have one of those. You need to download a converter program from Korg's website in order to convert the audio into a format that audacity can understand. I don't think that you can record directly into audacity with the PXR4.

Splitting a live mutitrack session into separate song projects

I do this all the time with Cubase SX3. I just save the project under a different name and split up the audio clips. I don't see why that would give you a performance hit.

    Outboard Gear?

Bands who check gear lists are more likely going to be a pain in your ass to record anyway. If they see a ton of rack gear lying around the studio your going to get a lot of idiots who are going to expect you to fix every little mistake or make them actually sound good. Use the lost "business"...

    Solved Mic cable length

There are too many other things affecting your sound to really worry about this, IMO.

    Worth condensing?

Try sticking with the 58. If you want a clearer sounding voice or guitar/uke, then consider going for a higher priced mic. Yes, they will sound significantly better, but for $300+, it may not be worth it to you.

    Recording Cymbals

I've done this, though with more than two cymbals and more than two mics. I miked two crashes, two chinas, ride, and hi-hat separately and it came out pretty good, except for having eight hi-hats coming from eight different places. :) Close mic around the bell of the cymbal. You may have...

    Drum Mic Mounting

I have a few of these.

    Gating drum bleed

I usually use a gate on the snare if there is too much hi-hat bleed though I rarely gate all the way. Sometimes I'll gate the kick. I usually leave the tom mics alone. Whenever I want to use a compressor on individual drum mics, I'll usually gate them first.

    Mic placement for tracking bass

I usually use a 57 at the center of the cone up close or a DI. I can't mic any further away than that because I either track in a room with a suspended ceiling or I'm tracking live.

Has anyone used the Lexicon MX 200?

I use mine every once and a while. SIR with some of the better impulses I think is better though.

Do I need a gate for drums

If your using a computer just use a plugin. If not your money would probably be better spent elsewhere anyway.

    What should I charge??

Charge $100/day and if it comes out like crap forgive the debt. This way you don't have somebody spending all day trying to punch in one word and putting down a boat load of tracks that are only going to give you a head-ache anyway. If the recording comes out good, you get some cash. If the...

    Warping samples of multiple tracks

Does anybody know how to do this in SX3? When you have to stretch a drum fill and all the stretches for each track need to be syncronized, how is this done? I know I've checked the manual and online help in the past and neither gave me more than 25% of an answer. This has been driving me...

Okay, I feel like an idiot for asking...

I'm not sure about SL, but in SX3 there is a seperate submenu for DirectX Plugs so yes, they are supported in SX. I would guess they are supported in SL. Check your plugin's menu to see if you have "DirectX" anywhere in there.

    weird recording idea

I've tried this before and it didn't work too well. Basically I recorded four drum tracks and tried to dump them into the computer two at a time. The tape recorder didn't play back at exactly the same speed each time and over the course of the song, the two pairs of tracks were off by as much...

    Head phones for mixing?

    I like my AKG K271's.

    How to connect headphones?

I'm guessing a headphone amp isn't really going to do the job for you if you only have two outputs on that card. If you have a couple of extra outs that don't seem to appear in the spec, a headphone amp should work fine. Behringer makes a little one for $20 (here). Or, try looking into a...
