Help Get Mix Off Site Going!

I am launching a new site, dedicated to mix offs, for fun and education. I am looking for feedback, as well as inviting anyone with some tracks they'd like to share to come on over and help get things rolling. I've started a couple of mixoff threads, but this is a brand new site, so any help...

How to record a Group Shout?

Reaper can do varispeed, though I haven't used it myself... Good idea!

    iMAC + ??? = great recordings

Hate that. Either lower the input level so low that the signal is swamped in noise, or deal with clicks and pops. Maybe brickwall limiter on the way in would help. I'm thinking I need a DI box with a soft clip function, if there is such a thing! Bass players, please don't wack your strings...

    Lost Audio.....Need Help

Sorry, I'm on a mac, so no good advice for XP. It's possible that when you restarted recording, it rewrote over the sectors that had the first batch of data, so it's just gone. Wish I had some better advice!

    iMAC + ??? = great recordings

I'm running an older intel iMac with a MOTU 828MKII + a Tango 24, for 18 inputs, and I get results I'm happy with. I use Cubase (still on version 4!) with no issues. I think we're at a point, technologically, where most any DAW and any interface will work. Preamps can make a difference, mics...

How to record a Group Shout?

I'd pan each pass to get the right effect. If depends on the song, of course, but having at least two passes gives you something to work with!

    advice needed

totally depends on the band, your gear, your room. I almost always track everything, sometimes including vocals, at once, in the same room. When I had a smaller rig, I would record the drums, with a guitar guide track into the drummer's headphones. Then add a new guitar, everything else. I...

How to record a Group Shout?

I usually would run the reference track over a monitor, have everyone stand back from the mic about 5-10 feet in a semi-circle. Then do two or four passes, to have a nice stereo spread with a big crowd sound. Keep the monitor as low as possible, and set it up so the speaker is in the null of...

    Lost Audio.....Need Help

What platform are you on? You might try a file recovery application. Most likely, those files are on the disk, but left 'open.' A recovery app should find them and 'close' them.

Low budget, untreated room, what's it sound like?

I hadn't really listened to the two version back-to-back, but now that I do, it sounds like he compressed the center channel and boosted it a bit. I emailed him when he first did the job to see if he had any suggestions/tips, but he was a busy guy and didn't get a chance to put notes together...

Low budget, untreated room, what's it sound like?

Here's the quasi-mastered one: http://suitcaserecordings.com/Days_Are_Gone-Quasi-Mastered.mp3 I usually mix like this, with a limiter and such on the two buss. Then I pull it off and lower the output level a bit for the mastering engineer. I instructed the band to provide this to Brad as a...

Low budget, untreated room, what's it sound like?

oh, and yes it was mastered via FTP, since he's way out east, and we're way out west, and time was an issue!

Low budget, untreated room, what's it sound like?

I thought he did a good job, I'll try to post a copy of the 'quasi-mastered' mix that I gave the band, for comparison. I know what you guys are saying about the snare drum. It was a little tonky, but he said he wanted a ring-y snare, rather than a 'snare-y' snare if that makes any sense. The...

Low budget, untreated room, what's it sound like?

Thanks for the comments! He is playing the rim, too! :D This was a very quick job, the band was working to finish it in time for a certain show, so we mixed after a long day of tracking, in a couple of hours. I agree it could be more polished, of course.

Forget to add that it was mastered by Brad Blackwood at Euphonic Masters!

    Vintage vocal sound....

Here's a breakdown of a session I did a while back with distorted/vintagey vocals: http://suitcaserecordings.com/recording-the-blizzard-of-77.html The band wasn't garage per se, but similar.

best way to record distorted vox

I've used a vocal that was recorded to an answering machine! Sounds pretty cool, a little hard to sync up, of course. I've also used the green bullet into a guitar amp on a few occasions. If I'm worried that I won't have clarity, I'll use a DI to split it off to a clean channel. I wouldn't get...

Low budget, untreated room, what's it sound like?

This is a project I recorded back in November. The room was a typical practice space, with high currugated metal roof, cement block walls, about 15' x 30' or so. One of the guitars is a pod, the bass is mostly a DI, vocals were recorded with MXL V63m, through an ACMP84. I used the ACMP84s on...

    Absolute do's or don'ts???

I am a fan of the one-big-room approach as well. And don't go overboard with treatment, either. Deal with flutters, and if you have bad room modes, but keep in mind that you want a second or so of reverb decay, and no room will be totally devoid of modes, unless it's an anechoic chamber. But if...
