What do I do with this EH mic pre?

I did a search and found the thread about the hum, but I don't think I really understood exactly. So what I really ought to do is get a balanced XLR to TRS cable and run it into the line in on the back of the box? That makes a lot more sense than running two stages of preamp. Thanks guys...

What do I do with this EH mic pre?

So I just got this Electro Harmonix mic pre, and I'm not sure how to use it. I have a firebox, and I plugged it into one of the firebox's preamps, then turned the gain all the way down. Problem is, there's hardly any signal coming through. I can turn the gain up, but then I'm using the...

A recording of my riot song, tell me what you think.

Yeah, I felt the biggest flaw in the song was that it's kind of flat (in terms of structure and feeling, not tuning) - the horn breaks it up a bit, but yeah it's slightly out of tune in places. i'm not sure if i like that or dislike it. I'm going to add a violin or cello to it, I think, which...

No comments? At least say why it doesn't do it for you...feedback is super useful to me. Thanks, neil

A recording of my riot song, tell me what you think.

So I recorded this over last weekend, and put a trumpet part in it a couple days ago. Tell me what you think, how the words work with the music and all that. Any advice on singing or musicianship or production or anything would be great too. It's the first one, joan of arc. thanks guys. neil

    yes no maybe

i dig it, man. The verses seem really buoyant and really keep my interest. The chorus seems a little bit less flowing and more forced, I think it might be how abruptly the change happens. A slow build up might work better with this song. Overall it sounds really good - I don't know much...

    yes no maybe

It's in .wma format, so nobody with a mac can listen to it...try converting to mp3 or something less proprietary. You might not get more comments, but then at least more people will be able to hear it. For example, I'd say something if I could open the file.

Simple question about a Sony mic.

Ok, this is probably going to sound dumb. My friend's got a Sony C48 and it's got this little switch on the inside that says "V" and "M", I assume meaning "vocal" and "music". I also assume it's a low frequency roll-off switch, but can anybody tell me which one is the roll-off and which one is...

    The Riot Of 1982

Thanks for all the feedback guys, it was really helpful. I took the cliche stuff into consideration, because I hate cliches, and I think I've eliminated most of them. I left the "pray at night in bed" line because I kind of like it, and I couldn't think of anything better. I also kept "angel...

    The Riot Of 1982

For me it's almost impossible to tell how a song will turn out without actually hearing it, 'cause pretty much all lyrics look at least kind of stupid on paper. I mean, even most Dylan or Cohen lyrics look kind of silly if you see them without having an idea of the melody. That said, I don't...

    Any feedback on my song?

I can't seem to get the screaming backup vocals to fit in with the regular vocals. I'm going to try some cutting around 5k when I get back home. I want it to sound like somebody's yelling behind the singer, but it seems either weak or overpowering depending on how I mix it. Any advice? And...

    Any feedback on my song?

I wrote and recorded this a few days ago, and it's one of the first times I've used a lot of tracks (well, only four but that's a lot for me) on a song so I'd like some advice on what to do with it - how to mix the harmony vocals, all that. Any feedback on my singing or just my songwriting...

Do you guys think this works as a song?

I sat down with my guitar and came up with a little doodle on a C chord, then I started humming a melody, then I came up with some really simple lyrics, and I ended up with this: I Have it's about a minute and a half long. I recorded whispy, doubletracked vocals over the guitar, which just...

    Need advice on mixing

Yeah - I kind of noticed the lack of low end on the lead vocals while listening through headphones. I'm not really sure where it went, 'cause the singer was pretty close to the mic and I didn't roll off the bass or anything. Oh well - I'll try boosting it a little around 120hz or so when I get...

    Need advice on mixing

I recorded this over the weekend with my friend Drew (he's lead vocals on this - I sing backup) for a demo CD we're putting together to give out to coffeehouses and stuff. It's three tracks, each recorded seperately, and I've never really done that before (I'm used to recording everything at...

    A slightly bouncier number.

I wrote and recorded this song yesterday again through one microphone, this time with the mic backed up a little so the guitar and voice (hopefully) sound more even to each other. I'm mainly looking for feedback on the lyrical and melodic aspects of the song, but anything would be helpful...

Looking for feedback on songwriting and singing

Yeah, I recorded both the vocal and guitar tracks through the V67 at the same time. I just sat in front of the microphone and played and sang. I ended up equalizing the whole thing for the vocals, meaning I pulled a few db off of 230 hz and added a couple to both 3k and 10k, so that probably...

Looking for feedback on songwriting and singing

I wrote this song a couple nights ago for a friend of mine. It's called "a song for claire" and is really simple - just acoustic guitar and voice. I recorded it to a single track with an MXL V67 and my laptop. I've only been playing for around two years and although I can play slightly more...
