Noise Floor (how low is low)

We have 2 workstations in our studio. Mac running a Pro Tools TDM rig. The other is a PC running various apps (including Pro Tools M-Powered). The PC is the box in question. Recently I've noticed more noise is the system. When I hit record on the PC I'm seeing the meters jump up to about -66db...

    Replication or Duplication

So the other CD Duplication thread got me thinking. How do you guys feel about replicated CDs versus duplicated CDs? I usually tell my clients and artists that I think replicated CDs look more professional. There's something about the green side of a duplicated disk that just screams "DEMO" to...

    Recording an acoustic

One of our artists just purchased a sweet Tachamine acoustic geeeeetar. Usually I mic acoustics (typically a 4050) but when she had this thing plugged into our PA it sounded SWEET! Is there ever a time that the pick-up is going to sound better than micing?

    Does Gear Have Soul?

Often when I'm creating a track for Rap/R&B clients, they ask me to use the MPC. When I ask why they say things like "because it has that hip-hop feel" or "I want it to bang in the club so it needs that MPC flavor". The arguement has been made that certain pieces of gear have different nuances...

    How Loud

So when you're mixing how loud do you have your monitors? I hear a lot of engineers cranking it up when mixing but I think you lose your point of reference when you try and mix that loud. I've heard that 85db (from the location of your chair) is about the max you should run. I checked yesterday...

Anyone Know of Software That Can Do This?

Okay, this isn't actually a piece of recording equipment. I play in a band where it's sometimes necessary to play audio files from a laptop instantly. I need software that will make lots of .wav files readily available for playback. BSI Stinger 2.0 is almost exactly what I'm looking for. Here...

    Recording Acoustic Guitar(s)

Greetings all! I have a session tonight in which the 2 artists both play acoustic guitar. They are pretty insistant that we track their guitar part at the same time in the same room. It's nearly a unison part (with one part being slightly more intricate). Is this a horrible idea? Any suggestions...
