    Hypostasis - Yet more

Ok... heres a couple of files that ive just pumped out as somthing to do at 1am in the morning. They were pretty happy with temper temper, but evilangelist they prefered a recording from 6 months ago done using a mic that came free with my computer. Hmmm.... Evilangelist Temper Temper...

    playback volume & monnitor placement

No, but its pretty crap that the people who made the monitor (which is supposed to be a reference) actually put it in the manual.

    Dynamic range - extinct

Hum. Interesting. Any of you listened to a vinyl record recently? Its a whole other league. We arnt talking about having to ride the volume dial all the time, it is possible to have a big dynamic range without having to turn the volume up and down all the time, and it is seriously noticable...

    Best Compressor?

My normal method is to do a hard limit to chop the very peaks off, then do a light compression of somthing like 10:1 , compressing at -6dB, or whatever is required for the track.. then another heavier pass at about 25:1 at perhaps -7dB, and repeat the process untill you are as compressed as you...

    Drummers Headphones

Thank you very much everyone, now I have a shortlist of sorts and it's time to take my drummer shopping! My take on this : I love my pro HD-25 's. Excelent isolation, great punchy sound. But the problem is that I need them more than the drummer does, for monitoring! And it's hard to...

Foam and accessories, in the UK!

Ok, so, I have a practice room in a rather old and decrepid part of a house which is used nearly every weekend for band practice. It transpires that over the years its been used for this, tiles in the bathroom upstairs are starting to come loose, so water drips down into the room below if...

    Drummers Headphones

Aloha! A quick question to recording drummers out there! What make/model of headphones do you use when recording? I'm looking for a nice cheap pair of isolating headphones for a drummer to record with. They need to be really loud, in-ear would probably be alright, if they go loud enough, and...

Hypostasis- grunge metal emo rock punk... or somthing

Whatever they are, ive mixed a few songs down and they are available to the "general public" right about here : www.hypostasis.co.uk/media/ I'm in the process or re-eqing bits and piecs to get the bass drum really present, which is all they seem to lack at the moment. But anyway, the band...

    Analog Mixer Setup/ What's Analog?

Quite right, you have a multi-track recorder, which you can then playback and mix in "realtime" and record that mix from a stereo subgroup out on the mixer. With reel to reel you would have several synchronised tape reels recording at the same time, which you can also mix afterwards in the same...

Importing Mics (and other gear) from the USA

Ok, so I heard of a friend who got a whole load of pro audio gear for recording from the USA at a fraction of the price that us Brits would pay for it. Particularly he was proud of a Marshall mic which he paid around £400 for which apparently normally costs over £1,000 in the UK. Myself, I...

Clip-on Mics (DPAs, Sony, Sennheiser) into Headset mics for drummers

Ok, So I'm thinking of making a few headsets for drummers with small mics in them so that they can sing whilst playing live. My first creation was simply a coathanger with a lot of PVC insulating tape (of varying colours!) a bit of surgical bandage and tape for padding and a Sennheiser mic...

    Reversing the Phase

Yeah sounds like the overheads where out of line making it slightly phasey but not exactly reversed. I fixed that and re-recorded and sounds good now :) and also adjusted the Overheads to they were a in a proper stereo arrangement, and were less influential in the mix. They were only there to...

    Getting the Clicks heard!

He doesnt hear the drum mix through his headphones! The Aux mix he listens to doesnt include drums at all, just the computer out and my slate-mic on the desk. But anyway... Hmm, beep is an idea. How could I set that up on Cakewalk? G 5 could work, but i think it might be too near cymabals/hihat.

    Getting the Clicks heard!

Well.. he isnt listening to any other tracks other than the click, and also I can set it up to change tempo etc. in time to the music with markers. I might try looking for another sound thats more piercing but at the time i couldnt remember the notes for the different sounds on the drum patch...

    Getting the Clicks heard!

These headphones ARE Isolation headphones. They're used for live use for PFLing mics when youre standing right next to a PA. And yes, this drummer is also deaf in one ear... *sigh*

    Record it hot!

    1. If its distorting, then thats out the window. Distorted recordings are a LOT harder to process than quieter recordings. Hiss would be inevitable but that can probably be taken care of better than nasty digital distortion. 2. You're right. Generally Pres amplify better than a digital...
