    Recording Distorted Guitars

I actually got some decent results once with a friend's Tech21 amp by mixing the direct signal with a microphone. The direct signal had a lot of body and the sizzle came from the mic.

    Bigger monitors or subwoofer?

Hi all, Yet another monitor question for everybody: I'm currently saving up some cash for a studio upgrade (more on that later!), and I've been having some successes with doing some recordings and getting some positive responses from demos. But, I have a big problem: I have no idea what's...

What mixer do you have and which do you love?

Regarding the Onyx, if you get the Firewire option, is that pre- or post-eq/sends/inserts?

Apparently that's what Black Francis used in The Pixies.

USB MIDI interface...anyone know of a decent one?!

My guess is, he's talking about using softsynths.

USB MIDI interface...anyone know of a decent one?!

I'm using a Midiman 8x8s (which is now an M-Audio 8x8s) - it works fine, no problems whatsoever. I had a M-Audio Midisport 2x2 before that which also worked fine. The real problem is probably not your midi interface, though, since MIDI has such a small footprint that it would never get...

    Recording Distorted Guitars

There have been plenty of good recordings with solid state amps. Tubes were out of fashion for a while, you know, but they still had records during that period. As far as getting a good sound goes, mic placement greatly affects what you get out of your amp. Try different placements, angles...

    Do I need a preamp?

No, the mixer has a preamp in it.

    Who's the Boss??

I would say that the engineer typically should listen to whomever he has a greater likelihood of working with again. Or, more to the point, the person whose decision it is whether they'll be using the same mixing engineer tomorrow.

    Electronic drums...

Brushes are a lot cheaper than an electronic drum kit.

What Is Your Audio Interface's Roundtrip Latency?

Type of interface: Presonus Firepod (firewire) Sample rate: 44100 ASIO Control Panel Buffer size: 352 samples (7.98ms) Reported round trip latency: 1112 samples / 25.22 ms Drift after ten testruns?: no I don't know that it's the Firepod's fault, I used to use an Aardvark 24/96 with similar...

With or Without You - - guitar

Honestly, though, everybody needs an ebow. So fun! I can't find mine. :( The main thing that differs between the ebow and the sound of "With Or Without You" is that the ebow really cranks the gain up on your pickup and always sounds like an overdriven guitar.

    Live classic rock band

Thanks for listening, gentlemen! That backing vocal thing is absolutely true but there unfortunately isn't too much I could do about it, as the only way I could get everything into the firepod was to submix all the vocals to 1 mono stem. (kick, snare, 2 OHs, 2 guitars, Bass, vocals). They...

    Chilled Instrumental Mix Help

This piece sounds very good, it's not extremely chilled though, the drums are pretty hard hitting. It's got kind of a Dido-y triphop vibe. You could spin it out a lot longer by adding some synth-strings... My main criticism is that websites that have background music are super annoying...

    Pop Punk remix thing...

The concept is awesome and I think the remix is really cool on its own. It turned out great in my opinion. As always, there's a couple of things that you could tweak. The vocal isn't too loud but there's a disconnect between the intimacy of the vocal recording and the pop punk style. I'm of...

    Live classic rock band

Hi all, Last week my friend's classic rock cover band played a concert in a local park and I went out and recorded it onto my laptop. There were about a million cables involved. I've pretty much finished mixing the tracks down (There were 24 songs and an intro, totalling 88 minutes  )...

    PreSonus converters to replace Delta66?

Maybe I'm not right about the Delta 66 - does it have its own preamps or does it just boost the level using software? From the descriptions I've seen it looks like the latter but I could be way off. Basically it works the way you're describing: each channel has a knob that controls the gain...

    PreSonus converters to replace Delta66?

I haven't compared the two but one key differences between them is that the Presonus boxes have a gain stage before the ADC, allowing you to more easily get an optimum level before conversion. The M-Audio one has a DSP-based input gain after the ADC.
