Time to soundproof the windows in my basement. They are 17" H x 34" W, single pane, wood frame, with a thin sheet of plastic about 2" away on the exterior to make them translucent. Seems like they are a weak link compared to the stud wall and concrete right next to them. How would you go...

And some followup: Options | Audio | General has the MIDI buffer size. Turning it down to 10ms greatly improved the response time and I've had no dropouts or jitters. With quick hits like 16th notes there is still some noticeable latency; is there a way to get rid of that?

I have an mAudio 49e MIDI controller which has some noticeable latency with my HP pavilion and stock soundcard. Will a delta 1010 get rid of the latency?

Thanks for the input. I agree, getting better sounds going in is the best way to do it... We ended up boosting the snare at about 1K and 5K and cutting it a bit in the 600's. For kick we boosted the low end, cut a bit in the 600's, and rolled off the top end. Cut the guitars a bit at 125Hz...

Fuzzface or big muff, standing in the right position in the room. Maybe a compressor. Or something fancy like the Fernandes sustainer or the sustainiac. But I'd really start with the fuzz and see if that gets you there.

My band recorded a 4 song demo, now we're mixing it down. The drums were recorded with 2 overhead condensers, a bass drum mic and a snare mic. The best snare sounds come from the overheads, which also happen to have more cymbal than snare. I'm thinking of 2 potential solutions to get the BD...

I like JJ pre's in JCM800-ish amps. For the power tubes, I'd also go with JJ or maybe the Winged C Svetlanas. No sovteks or rebranded sovteks (like Fender, Mesa, and some of the GT's).

You're talking about something like screwing a 2x2 cleat to the joist, then screw one or more layers of sheetrock to the cleat? Would angling the sheetrock help dissipate the sound inside the room? I.e. so that at one point on the joist it's, say, 2" from the bottom, while at another point...

Thanks for the links and the tips, FitZ (and thanks to you, Rod!). Looks like 5/8" rock is ~$.40/sf rather than the ~$1/sf for the vinyl. May be time to rethink that. Re sealing the room: how is acoustic caulk different from ordinary caulk? And it sounds like the idea is to make sure there...

Yar, I've done some research, but I want to get a plan which is not doomed to failure from the outset (Lead on, MacDuff!). My cost est last night was about $1K for vinyl + 1 layer of rock on the walls and mineral wool on the ceiling...which means it will probably cost even more. I'll let you...

How well does mineral wool work as an isolator? For the ceiling, how effective would it be to install a layer of mass loaded vinyl and a layer of mineral wool between the joists and around the HVAC pipes?

Crazy talk! ;) Or at least too conventional for this project... A cloud might be a bit tight for headroom for guys like me (6'-2") with this basement joist height (~6'-5")...it already has a hung ceiling which makes me duck, and removing that may get me some more ceiling tiles. I can deal...

I have some used ceiling tiles (2' x 4' x ~1/2"), carpet, and carpet underlayment to use for basement studio stuff. How well will the ceiling tiles work as bass/mid/high traps, and what uses could I put the carpet and underlayment to?

What did you use to soundproof your studio/ practice space? How did you deal with the windows? How did you deal with basement ceilings/ floors of the main level? And, how stupidly loud can you be with little or no volume outside? What I'm thinking about here is cutting down on sound...
