If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise...
some tips,
C1000s' match well to a darker pre-amp, with EQ off (if EQ is available). I will usually have the lo-cut on (if available). I nearly always use mine with the hyper-cardioid capsule, it changes the high frequency curve quite dramatically. It tames that "harshness" everyone bitches...
WOW!!
OH...MY...GAWD...
Now I have seen everything. Harvey that was the best post I've seen all year, it should be in the FAQ's!

Has much changed?
Not by much and by a lot. The circuit is the same, it has just evolved (or devolved depending on who you ask) from point-to-point wiring (160, 161) to PCB (160x, 160xt) to surface mount (160a). Parts, of course, change over time so that can have an effect on the tonality as...
>THe DBX 160's and 161's are opto leveling units<
Nope, both of those units are VCA based. dbx has never made an opto levelling circuit, we're the VCA guys. You are probably thinking of 1176's and LA2A's.

The ProVocal is aimed at the first time recordist. The guy who just got his first sound card and wants to have a bunch of fx options available to mess around with. If you are past that point, it probably isn't the unit for you.

Hey Griffin, rough couple of days on GM's bbs eh? :D
I'm an AKG man. I have a bunch of their mics and I dig most of them, and can find uses for all (even the much maligned C1000s). This does not mean that I don't have other manufacturers mics. I have used Rode mics (various models) to great...

That portion of the article that explains that they used a Digitech Talker oughta be put into the FAQ's. It seems this question pops up quite often. I can tell VoxVendor is getting tired of being the official "How'd They Do The Cher Thing" guy.

I'd add a few sm57's, a couple of Senn MD421's, and D112.

You and me both. I already have a pair of the C451b's (love 'em). I've been thinking of getting the 603's for um, less finesse oriented drummers. I would feel better about putting a 603 on the hat with an aggressive...
Hey Chessrock, have you compared the 603's to the C451b's? I'm currently digging the C451b's and if the 603's are anywhere close they might be my next mic purchases. I tried searching to see if Harvey had done the comparison, but the archives don't seem to go back far enough.

Yup.
>Then Herman and Ed came along and put it all in perspective. Hell, I'm sure this thread has now persuaded some users to reallocate resources from pre's to something more useful like mic's or monitors.<
Leave it to Ed to be the voice of reason, good on ya man.

No way man, I'm not even close to qualifying. Check out the number of posts I have, compared to the number of posts Alan has. I've been here longer and I have like, 200 something. Alan has like a thousand.
200 some-odd posts, all meat. :D

Thanks Chessrock.
In case you are new here, Chess and I (and others) have had this discussion before and it is entirely good natured. For the record I have no problem with Chess' position, disliking a piece of gear because it just doesn't do it for you is fine. I dislike a lot of gear for a...
Ha Ha!:D
Chess, that stuff you quoted from Michael Schoenfeld kills me! He is one of my oldest dearest friends and the info he reports is basically watered down info I've related to him. Why don't you ask me instead, that way you'll get the unwatered-down version:) Such a small world.

Let's compare the 386 and the 586:
386:
Dual mono Tube pre-amp
Drive control (controls amount of tube saturation).
Output control (where you derive most of your gain).
Analog to digital converter w/TYPEIV conversion. AES/EBU and S/pdif and Word clock.
XLR and TRS in/out and insert point...
