Ha Ha!
Chess, that stuff you quoted from Michael Schoenfeld kills me! He is one of my oldest dearest friends and the info he reports is basically watered down info I've related to him. Why don't you ask me instead, that way you'll get the unwatered-down version

Such a small world.
The Digitech VTP-1 and
the dbx 586 are cousins as far as design is concerned, both were designed by IVL. However, the 586 was completely re-designed by dbx engineers before being produced, and the VTP-1 was not. The output section on the 586 was completely re-vamped and the two sound very different from each other.
The lack of responses concerning the 586 on a HOMErecording bbs actually makes total sense to me, and Chessrock pushing the Mindprint over the 586 on a HOMErecording bbs makes sense to me as well. If you peruse the negative responses to the 586 you will discover that a lot of the most negative responses were from peple who had never even used one. After doing this job for a while I'm able to tell if people have used a particular piece of gear based on what they say (or don't say) about it. You should listen for yourself.
The amount of dbx gear being sold on e-bay is a specious argument at best. dbx has been in business for 30 years, we have so much gear out there that it would be much weirder if only small amounts were being sold on e-bay. The sheer volume of Silver Series units that were produced easily accounts for the number of units being sold and re-sold on e-bay.
The Silver Series probably outsold ALL stand-alone pre-amps from ALL other manufacturers COMBINED.
