    Shure KSM44 for drum overheads?

Tried a pair of KSM44's for overheads on a drum kit. Gave a big sound, but we ended up going with a couple Shure SM81's instead. They were thinner sounding, but the drummer preferred that to the sound of the KSM44's. So does anyone have experience with the KSM44's as drum kit overheads? In...

How do you constructively criticize someone better than you?

Why do you think he writes better songs than you? Especially if it is a different style than what you do. There could be legions of people who would like your songs. There are multi-platinum album selling bands that I think write absolutely crappy songs. And then there are bands that are...

    Recording Books

David Miles Huber writes some great stuff for recording. He's an Electronics Engineer as well and that knowledge will come out in his books. Modern Recording Techniques was one of his first, if not the first one. -c

    Songwriter's Goldmine!

Thanks for all the input! Very cool. BTW- I don't know if its coincidence or not, but I read a little blurb about songscope.com just last week in the Wall Street Journal as one of the top ways to increase visibility to your songs. Sorry- I do not recall the date, but it was last week. Happy...

    most underated song writer

Many of the white blues purists (Page, Beck, Richards, Clapton, et al.) were fans of Willy Dixon which is why a lot of his tunes were covered by those guys. Any fan of those guitarists should know the name of Willy Dixon. But yes- he would be an underrated songwriter, except by those great...

    Question for Chris Squire/YES fans..

What makes the difference to Chris Squire's bass sound on his solo album "Fish Out Of Water" to the sound on the YES albums of that time? His Rickenbacker really twangs on that album, but if you listen to YES's "Going For The One" which came out right after (and included an outtake tune from...

How about the most unknown songwriters?

Talked about underrated, but how about those great songwriters out there that are either unknown to a large extent or not really recognized as great songwriters. Unknown- Brett Krull and Chris Buzby from echolyn (ever heard the album "as the world"?) Unrecognized- Alan White from YES...

    Oktava MC012 cardioid capsule dead

I have two 012's with the capsule packs and discovered that one of the cardioid capsules is no longer working. Has anyone else experienced this? I have had these mic's for 1.5 years and honestly have not used the cardioid capsule that much. Anybody got advice on where to get it replaced or...

Why is my sound so "tinny"?

I am miking steel string acoustic and I am getting a very tinny sound with a sometimes explosive poppy bottom end. I am miking with an AKG C3000B and an Oktava MC012 with the cardioid capsule. The AKG is about 6-8 inches away and 3-4 inches above the whole. I have used the Oktava both above...

    Help! Oktava mc012 help needed!

Well- I am not an expert on miking drums, but an SM57 is very directional (cardioid patter) and is a dynamic mic, which typically means that you will not get as good a dynamic range. Typically the SM57 is used to mic a snare or tom- maybe a ride, but the whole kit? Never heard that application...

    At 4033

CPotter82~ The 4033 is a great mic and many prefer it for acoustic guitar. However, you should A/B the AT 4033 with the following (some of these have been mentioned in this thread already): Shure KSM27 (approx. $299) AKG C3000B (approx. $299) Rode NT1000 (approx. $299) Rode NT1 (approx. $199)...

    Help! Oktava mc012 help needed!

A lot of mic pre's will have 1/4" out; but, even if they didn't, you could get an XLR to 1/4" cable. Depending on your budget you might look into a few different mic pre options- A Behringer Shark (about $40 to $80 depending on where you go), A Presonus Blue Tube (about $150 to $200), or a Joe...

Behringer Ultra-Dyne for vocal and guitar compression during tracking?

I just got a Behringer Ultra-Dyne Pro with the idea of comressing vocals and guitar during tracking. However, now that I have opened it, I am confused as to what this machine is for. It seems that is might be more for mastering rather than tracking. There is 1 pair of inputs and outputs for...
