Talked about underrated, but how about those great songwriters out there that are either unknown to a large extent or not really recognized as great songwriters.

Brett Krull and Chris Buzby from echolyn (ever heard the album "as the world"?)
Unrecognized-
Alan White from YES. Probably because he is such a humble guy and a drummer- but he made some great contributions to the YES catalog of great tunes: Changes, Turn Of The Century, In The Presence Of (from the latest YES offering "Magnification", which is a great album, BTW), Run With The Fox (Christmas tune he did with Chris Squire back in early 80's) to name a few... Alan White is actually a great pianist as well as a drummer. Wish he would do another solo album and play piano!
