Stereo or mono/doubles for the dulcet tones of my fingerpicked D-18?

This is what I recommend. Find some various recordings of fingerpicked guitar whos sound your trying to get close to. Make several different recordings of yourself using the various mic'ing techniques you know about and at least as many variations and unique combinations as you can come up...

    Snare res head mic.

One quick and dirty (and cheap) trick you can do also is to tape a quarter to the beater of the kick. that will give you a good "click" sound. The material of the heads (skins) are important too ..... drums with calf skin heads arent real condusive to a metal sound. lol. I am going to go out...

Tired of being a condenser mic whore!

The above suggestions for a Senn 421 or an RE20 (I like mine a lot) are good ones.... I have to suggest to you a Sennheiser 441. And although I LOVE my Groove Tubes tube mics, since I picked up mine (used for about $225) it has absolutely become my favorite and most used mic. The 441 is...

    Snare res head mic.

I have recently (finally) obtained great results using a Sennheiser 441 underneath the snare. Drummer had a pretty crisp attack with his playing so I was able to get a nice sound out of just that bottom mic and the overheads. (actually I was not able to get a very good complimentary sound out of...

    Battery powered condensers

Dont forget the CAD E-series. (E100/e200/e300) They take 9volt or NiCad batteries (I would recommend using NiCad) and I have owned both an E200 and have an E100 now. I havent yet used the e100 on battery but the e200 worked (and sounded) great using only the battery. The e100 is a great...

    mic for everything

Another vote for the CAD m179 ..... varialble pattern, nice open sound, not too bright, takes eq pretty well, and great bang for buck. -mike

CAD Equitek e100-2 & e300 Condenser Mic Package

I LOVE my E100. Great on lots of things including kick and bass cabs. I think it has a nice open sound .... fairly neutral, takes EQ well, and really pretty versitile. Sounds good on acoustic guitar and I put it on a hammond cab and got good results. Pretty darn versitile with a good bottom...

    OH Mic decision!

I'm not sure what innobidova was implying by there but it does not matter if the OH mics are SD or LD as far as picking up toms or what ever. That would have much more to do with the pick up pattern of the mic .... omni, cardiod, or hypercardiod .... and at least equally importantly ... mic...

    Another Snare Mic'ing Thread

I recently just recorded some songs and ended up completely tossing the top snare track (SM57 through UA2108) and just going with the overheads and bottom snare (mic'd with a Senn MD441 into a UA 2108). The songs this was for are fairly heavy rock ... slow core-ish ..... which made the results...

    snare or chunky ass?

Well I know that Chessrocks response may have seemed a bit curt. But if EQing doesnt help it now .... then re-recording may be the only definitely be the better option. Although I understand how these things go and may not be possible. I understand you have tried a bunch of combinations of...

    Michael Brauer/Bus Compression/Plugins

Yeah I commented on that article when it first came out. I think it is one of the best and mst informative articles about specific technique I have ever read in a music mag. And his rig is AWSOME. Great article. -mike

Weird ringing noise .... cant track it down. ???

Thanks guys. I double checked and it doesnt come from all tracks but all of the guitars and a little on the vocals. I will definitely try running a seperate source through the poweramp to check it out. - mike

Weird ringing noise .... cant track it down. ???

Hi all. Havent posted in quite a while. But I am hoping someone can help me track down this noise I am having. I have recently brought back my ADAT HD rig back to my place for mixing down some tracks recorded at our practice space. The tracking/monitoring was done on a Peavy board .... i know...

What physical properties must a kick drum microphone have...

To be a truely great kick mic it needs to be mic'ing a truely great drum kit played by a truely great musician ..... sorry , I mean drummer. That said .... I really dig an RE20 or lately a CAD E100. -mike

EV RE20 vs AKG D112 for kick drum

These guys pretty much summed it up. I have an RE20 and it works really well for a full sound. My experience with the 112 is that it just doesnt give enough ..... beef. Good to get the click but I never could get really good body with the 112. The RE20 deffinitely has a round low end ...

anyone know anything about sennheiser mics?

I know the 441 has become my absolute favorite mic in the world for just about everything. That may change when I get a good ribbon. Seems you've found the differences on the two you mentioned though. -mike

    Question: "Compression Theory" (w/screenshots)

1st question of mine is about the scale being used in your software (as shown in your screen shots). Is that a percentage .... the 100 being 0dBf? If so, then you should convert it to a dBf scale as that is the scale you are using to set the compressor. That could be a big reason why you are...

Brick loses in showdown to Behringer. wtf?!

I am not an owner of a brick/Aphex/or Jomeek ..... just a UA2108, dbx 286a, and my tascam mixer pres. I did however used to have a Berri MX mixer for pres and I NEVER heard it sound "fat and warm". Maybe its just me, but "brittle" and "sterile" deffinitely the most defining characteristics of...
