    drum compressor?

Here's my opinion: The kick and snare are heard so often in the song and so promonant in the mix (usually) that the average listener will catch on to volume changes, so they are usually compressed. Toms aren't in every measure, so I think with a competant drummer, you don't need to compress...

    More Q's about vocal recording

Hey man, you mentioned that you have a powered mixer? If that's the case, and you have either built in fx, or an fx loop, then you need to look for a direct out of some type on your mixer. Anything that WILL NOT SEND ANY POWER! See if you have a direct out, or maybe even a tape out. It's not...

Need help getting drum sampler setup

Hi all. I need some advice on what to get and how to hook it up. Here's what I want to do: I'd like to be able to take drum sounds and program them on my computer. I would like to also be able to make corrections (for when I hit the note late or something) on my computer. Then I woul like...

    Getting rid of stick clicks

Need help! I am trying to get rif of some stick clicks which occur between a transition from one part of a song to another. They were left in the recording by mistake. The clicks are on a stereo track containing all the instruments of the song bounced together, and were picked up by most of...

    O. T. PA Question

This is slightly off topic, but I have a question about PA wires. My band has a poweramp with bannana plugs/open wire outputs to the speakers, and the speakers have paralell 1/4" inputs. (don't ask me why the amp has bannan plugs, I didn't buy it). I want to know the bestr way to get a clean...

best way to record electric bass?

A note on EQing bass with a Roland: I have a Roland also, and one of the few drawbacks is that the preamps suck. If possible, try using a separate preamp or mixer to add some EQ.

    Bass Ideas?

My search for a new bass has just ended, so while all the brands are fresh in my head, I'll give you a few suggestions. Fender P and Jazz basses: don't like them personally, but they are good Ibabez: if you like skinny necks, the SR series is perfect (avoid SR400 though) Carvin: good bass...

    Help! Need better sound!

A few months ago, there was an excellent post called Creating Space in my Mix or something like that. Search the site for that post, it 'll give you lots of little tricks and stuf.

any advice on hard disk recorders?

The Roland is actually 24 bit, the converters are 20 bit. If you are happy with what you got, then no need to upgrade. If your not, I think that the Roland are a bit better than minidisks, but you're gonna pay more for them. Go check them out.

    How should I get started?

I agree with dobro, but there are ways to save some cash if you have to. I would use the Windows comp. cause you have a Cd burner. You can use the soundcard you have now, but you can only record 1 thing at a time. For software, check out N-tracks and Power Tracks Pro, I think they go for...

Making Midi Drums more realistic ?

Here's a little trick I once used: Do the whole drum thing, loop them to save time, ect. Then record allthe other stuff. Then, get rid of your drum tracks, and do new tracks manually. Keep your mouse off the loop icon, just play. When you feel a cymbol crash comming, hit the cymbol botton...

Advice on a Stereo Power Amp and Speaker Cabinet

A cabnet with 2 speakers is a cabnet with 2 speakers. A stereo setup is 2 amps, or cabnets, which sound really cool live on both sides of the stage, especially with only one guitarrist. It will sound cool for recording, but will cost a good amount of money.

I need help choosing a single coil humbucker

Just do you know, it is possible to put a humbucker in a strat. One of my band's guitarists has a gibson 57 classic in a strat...Japanese strat i think. It may sound like a huge contradiction, but it sounds cool. If you must stick with a single coil, check out the fender lace sensors.

any advice on hard disk recorders?

I've got a 1680 I bought for a bit over 2k. That along with the 880's are very good. The 880 goes for around 1700. There is also a new rackmount 880, and Mackie and someone else are comming out with a 24 track system. I would definatily stick with the Roland over all other hard disk...

    Guitar Collections

Geeze, I can barley afford recording equipment and enough guitars to get through a gig. My prise possession is an Ovationn 12 String acousdtic/electric with all the trimmings. It looks exactly like the one Robert Smith of The Cure uses.

    alternitive to sm58

Last night at a gig, my band used Shure Beta sm58's. Sounded good on 2 of the 3 singers, but I have a deep voice and I think it looses the low end a bit too much. THis could easily be solved by having the soundguy mess with the eq, but they are usually jerks who don't really care about it...

    alternitive to sm58

It's gonna be for live recording, so I can't really use a condenser.
