    where to buy mics online

I'll also nominate 8thstreet...good prices and great service. musiciansfriend has served me well for the last 10 years. http://www.mercenary.com/ is great for high quality gear. And, of course, Ebay. I've also bought from sweetwater.com. Most local stores I visit will match prices from the...

What if you were me - Mic Pres

I paid $750 for my Sytek, direct from Mike, back in May. This is definately a step up from the Mackie pres, but in no way is it a Great River. I have no desire for anyof the "under a grand" pres though, like a Grace or RNP. My next pre will be one of the really expensive ones, but for now...

    HHB Radius 20 EQ

They look pretty similiar to me. Thanks for the link. :) So, has anyone used the TLAudio EQs?

    96khz ???

I record at 44.1, only because I mix to digital and I want to keep it as simple as possible, although I record and mix at 24 bit. Dithering to 16 bit is done during the mastering process. If I had a good analogue 2 track to mix to, I'd do 96k or higher. Storage space to me is irreleveant...

    HHB Radius 20 EQ

Anyone have any info on this piece? 8thstreet.com is selling them for less than $500 right now, and I could use a decent little 2 channel analogue EQ. It's 2 channels of 4 band parametric EQ, with toob and makeup gain knobs. The biggest complaint I could find is the knobs are all the same...

    snare and mic question

Room has low celings, lots of carpet. Pretty dead. Doesn't have many sweet spots so I have to close mic everything. I did a "room within a room" thing in an already small basement. But at least the neighbors don't complain. Other than that, I run a JoeMeek or Sytek pre into a Tascam DM-24...

    kick drum recording.

The more I use my D112, the more I hate it. But it's the only "bass drum" mic I've got, so I use it. Last session, I put it inside my high tuned Tama Rockstar for a punk session. But I also put a Shure KSM 32 outside about a foot and I blended the two in mixdown. Killer. I compressed the...

    Tascam MX-80 preamp

Tascam's mic pres scare me, although I own and use the pres on a DM-24 pretty regularly. I just can't get into them. They sound good, but I'll take my Joe Meek or Sytek pres over them anyday. But for the price, I'd go ahead and try. Seriously - $61?. Give it one session and if don't like it...

    Compressor Settings for Belting Vocals

Turn your output down on the plugin/software/whatever. Or turn your mic gain own a few notches. It depends on where the clipping occurs - experimient and find out.

    snare and mic question

On my cheap little Rosewood Tama Snare, I start with a Beta 57 right on the shell, outside the hole, and run it through my Joe Meek Twin thingy. Then I add just a little compression. This picks up the snare sound nicely, with a little low end because of the mic's characteristics. If I need...

    Kicks mics, expanded.

The more I use my D112, the more I dislike it. I mixed a KSM 32 (back about a foot or so) with the D112 last night. Sounds pretty good.

    compressors

I like my Composer Pro for stuff like toms and backup vocals. For the $100 I paid I think it's great for my applications. I do have an RNC and a JoeMeek for vocals, bass, bass drum, snare, whatever else though, so take it fwiw.

    Everybody hates this ques., but?

Yip, I was going to mention proximity effect but somehow managed not to. That's exactly it. Also, I think it was pipelineaudio that did a write up a little while ago on how to check for phasing with 2 mics on a guitar amp. Do a search cuz it works.

    recording mic

I'll second the used Beta 57 route - good low end that can get dirty when you put it halfway down your gullet (not literally). Just find the right spot and leave it there, using your distance from the mic to get the sound you want on particular words or phrases. Just remember if it doesn't...

    Everybody hates this ques., but?

I prefer a Beta 57 to a regular 57 sometimes, mostly on snare and guitars. It has more balls (low end) when up close to the source. On rhythm guitars I'll put a beta 57 on the grill, then either a 57 a few inches off or a sd condensor back a foot or so. On my rosewood snare I put a beta 57...

Spouses/significant others who put up with our expensive/time-consuming hobby

1.) She bought me an American Fender Strat in the perfect color (and lines up 40 cans of Guiness for presentation). 2.) She let's the band play in the bassment (also where my home studio is). 3.) She hasn't killed any of the idiots that are in and out of here. She also has her own artistic...

Recording drums with only one condenser...

If I were to 1 mic a drumset I would put the mic out front of the kit (or wherever it sounds best) and have the drummer figure out the balance via headphones, if he's worth a damn. Otherwise, mic and pray.

Time to actually buy a vocal mic. Here are the options

I couldn't get the mp3 to play on my laptop for some reason I need to look into. Anyways, if your voice sounds like I think is described here, I'll second Chess' recommendations on the KSM 32. Or the KSM 27? It's cheaper but seems to have good reviews, although I haven't heard it...

    I just got myself a free mic...YAY!!!

I have one that I give to singers whenever I run sound. It's been toosed and dropped several times and has always pulled through. A tough mic that sounds pretty good.
