    Surfing with the alien

I've been trying to learn to play "Surfing" lately and you do a fine job on the guitar. If you wanted some suggestions on doing a good cover here goes: 1. The drums are very close to what Satriani uses on the album -- of course the drums are the weak-point on that album. Punch up the drums a...

    Getting Started w/ MIDI

Hey, I've been recording for a while now, but so far all with Analog instruments (like guitars). I'd like to start messing around with Digital. I'm not a keyboard player, and I don't have a lot of space, so I don't think I want a big keyboard. I've been thinking about getting a MIDIMAN...

    J-Station & Cakewalk

The MIDI connections are not for sound or music info at all. They are used to connect to your computer so you can use the J-Edit software to create new pre-sets for your J-Station. You can use the S/PDIF to send a super high-quality signal out from your J-Station to your computer. However...

    Pics of my new studio

Middleman: Yeah, I figured that out pretty quick and built some monitor stands in my friends garage. They came out great. Check 'em out: http://www.xalien.com/studio/stand3.jpg http://www.xalien.com/studio/xalien_studio-may-6-12.jpg Mizchif: I really like the Studiophile monitors. They...

    cassette tape types

Yes, I think you're the only one that didn't know that. :-) But seriously, I used to use type-II with my Fostex X-15 4 track and they work great. MUCH better than type 1. You'll be able to hear the difference. Seriously!

    Need Mixdown Feedback!!

This is not my style, but it sounds solid. I thought the main hook was catchy and the rapping sounds professional.

    Good monitors,low budget

M-Audio Studiophile SP-5B: $299 Can't beat the quality for the price. I have a pair and love 'em. They're small too which is nice if you have a tight space!

Hardware MP3 Player, SPDIF, and Girlfriend.

Actually not usually. Typcially you'll load MP3s onto an MP3 player through an interface like USB. The MP3 player will either show up as another disk drive (and you just copy files to it) or you'll use a custom piece of software that will come with your player. Note that while USB is pretty...

    modelers

Given your needs (late night recording) a modeler is the way to go. Head down to Guitar Center (or whatever you have close by) and try a few out. Personally, I got a J-Station and I'm very happy.

    Newbie. New Music.

Hi jkz, Welcome to the group. Here are some comments: I listed to "Fly Away" first. It has a nice sound, but overall it didn't do much for me. I kept waiting for it to really get going, it seemed to want to go to another level, but I didn't feel it did. Second, I listened to "Memories of a...

    Going Home.... instrumental.

Reminds me of the opening theme music to Top Gun. :)

    Club Zero - "Energy"

I really like this. The synth sounds are great, and I like the style a lot. So, if this is the radio edit, where's the full-blown version? I'd love to hear it.

    demo done acoustic

Doesn't work if you click on the link, but right-click save-as seems to work. The mix sounds a bit "dead". You might try some reverb on the vocals. Also, you seem to clip something once in a while (like right at around 2:01). Watch out for that. On a side note, I'm not sure what the first...

My latest recording (metal mix #2)

Rock on man. Nice sound on the guitars. I agree with the others that the drums could sound larger. Other than that my only gripe is the ending. It seems to just fall of a cliff. :)

Pics of my new custom monitor stands

A couple weeks ago I posted a pic of my little studio. At the time one of the big problems was my spiffy new monitors were sitting directly on my desk (well below ear level). We'll after three hours in my friends garage yesterday I now have spiffy stands for my monitors that get them up to...

    Cool Chart

Harmonics That is a cool chart, but you've got to remember one thing in relation to that chart when you're mixing. Any of this instruments will on that chart will produce harmonics far above the range indicated on that chart. About harmonics...

    Recommended Books?

You guys are probably going to laugh, but I picked up Home Recording for Musicians for Dummies and it's really quite a good bood. Nice broad coverage and it gives lots of useful tips.
