Pics of my new custom monitor stands

A couple weeks ago I posted a pic of my little studio. At the time one of the big problems was my spiffy new monitors were sitting directly on my desk (well below ear level). We'll after three hours in my friends garage yesterday I now have spiffy stands for my monitors that get them up to head level. Here are some pics:

The basics:

Now, with a monitor:

And here's the whole thing:

Now I know this isn't as ambitious as a lot of the projects some of you've been working on, but I'm pretty pleased. Now all I need to do is paint these guys and put on some feet to isolate them from the desk.

Let me know what you think! :)

If the monitors do not have rubber feet, you will want to put a rubber pad under them, too, to reduce vibration noises and the likelihood they'll move around on you and maybe fall off the stands.

I was just going to say that...! You need some open-cell neoprene under that to de-couple the stands from the desk.....

Nice job though!

great de-coupler

Hi xalien,

I've just discovered a great source of de-coupling material for monitors! Cloth-covered rubber mousepads! I've recently put in a couple under mine and they seem to do a fine job.

Good idea.

Maybe thats a good use for a large box of mouse pads I had made up for a business venture that resulted in nothing more than a large box of mouse pads.

Studio insulation!!!

Mousepads! Now that's not a half bad idea. I wound up looking for a long time trying to come up with something suitable. I eventually wound up at an arts and crafts store. I bought some rubber feet for the bottom of the stands, and some small foam pads for the top (to go under the monitors). It seems to do a good job.

You need at least 1/2" depth for that to really be effective.... stack 'em up!

...and while you're at it...some split conduit wire....or loom wire...whatever you want to call it...to tidy up that stuff hanging underneath your desk!!:p

those guys aren't too top heavy are they??

mixmkr,

Yes, it's a mess under the desk. :p

As for top heavy, I was a little worried about that, but a couple days after I installed these guys we have a 5.0 earthquake very near where I live. I was sitting at the desk at the time and the stands did wobble, but they didn't fall down! :)
