Need Help With Mixing Of Song

First reaction, wow your not afraid of reverb are you ? :) The vocals are a little back in the mix, I think your reverb is set a little too long, and the reverb trail sorta clouds things a bit too much. Laser thingy would be cooler if you automated it to pan around from side to side. Kick and...

EQing Levels (yes even more EQ)

I forgot to add... Don't EQ with tracks solo'd. Every track effects the others. I think it's best to start off with kick, snare, and bass in a typical rock situation, and get that sounding great then add in overheads and the rest of the drums.. Once you get a solid rythmn section the rest will...

EQing Levels (yes even more EQ)

EQing uses selective phase cancellation to cut frequencies.... The more you EQ the more you risk screwing up your phase. You should try your best to get your sounds to tape, but if you have to EQ then cutting is your best option because you're taking away the bad, not adding something that...

    analog or digital?

Getting a good sounding analogue set up is going to cost alot more then then a comparable digital setup. Tape itself is quite expensive these days. As far as what is better? Well they are completely different. Mixing with a reel to reel and a big console is alot of fun, but as far as editing...

    Neumann TLM 103 Yes/No?

AKG C141 B/ULS. If you wan't versitility this is the way to go. I find it doesn't add too much colour, which is something you want in a workhorse mic. Also the switchable polar patterns, adjustable pads, and bass roll offs are a great feature.

Turning up the fader shouldnt effect how hot your signal is being recorded.

    Keyboard use for making beats

I agree with both of you. Learning any instrument will help you write music. Learning musical theroy will help you write music. I've seen people with great ears and no musical training who can make good beats, but I've also seen professional musicians with great ears who can make great beats.

Okay to plug in a phantom mic with the power turned on?

Plug the mic in then let the phantom charge up. Then turn the phantom off and wait atleast a minute before you unplug.

u87 vs. Kiwi for "all pourpose" mic??

Yeah the U87 i have experience is from the 80s and I do find it to be shrill at times, but I haven't gotten the chance to use it with a great pre yet.

u87 vs. Kiwi for "all pourpose" mic??

The U87 is a great mic. But it's not good on everything. It seems to be quite shrill on some voices while full on others. I really like it as a room mic, and for micing bass cabinets. As far as being an all purpose LDC, probably not, but you definately wouldn't regret having one.

Shure SM-57 vs U-87 for recording guitar?

The SM 57 is a great mic if used on the proper source. I find it strange that you owned a U-87 before you even knew what an SM 57 sounded like.
